AN L-plate driver has been charged after leading police on a high speed car chase and slamming his car door into the side of a police van.

Officers tried to get a 17-year-old boy to pull over when they saw him driving at South Lake, in Perth's south, at about 2am (WST) today, police said.

But the teenager, who was driving with a passenger, sped away, they said.

Officers gave chase and the driver reached speeds of up to 140kph through suburban streets.

The officers called off the chase when the driver ran a red light but they later spotted him in a neighbouring suburb and again started to follow him.

Police say that as the youngster slowed down, he slammed his door into the passenger side of the police van, causing minor damage.

A teenager has been charged with failing to stop when called upon, reckless driving and contravening a learner's permit.
