bugster,

I do not likt the chances of getting the side airbag sorted out as there is more to the system than a flash.

I am sure that the BCM controls the airtbags, you will also need sensors and I am sure other items like wiring. Did you replace the seats or only the skins ?

As for the rest, I think you must have caught him on a bad day, or he is just an a$$hole

If there is wiring loom to plug the airbags into under the seat region, I'm sure a reconfig / reflash of the Airbag PCM would fix that problem..

Looking at the wiring diagrams, it would seem as though there are tempory resisters placed where the side airbags would normally plug.. Is this what you noticed? Althought I would have to look at it in great detail.

Dan

From memory there were a couple of plugs that were undone from the old seats and fitted up to the new seats no worries. Both the seats were the 4-way adjustable ones (not the 6-way with memory). Does that help? I didn't notice any temporary resistors? :w00t2::msm:

Bummer, maybe that's what he was on about. I replaced the whole seat (my old ones did not have side airbags). The guy did mention something about the safety restraint system as a whole, additional wiring, sensors, etc, so maybe he had a point. I didn't argue it with him as I knew nothing about it, just politely asked if he'd mind looking into it for me.

But if what we are saying holds true, then why would the airbag light on my dash suddenly start registering a problem? Surely the car must now somehow know that additional airbags are there that aren't 'connected' (for want of a better term)? :w00t2:

I would only plug in the plugs that were in the old seat.

It is possible that the wiring is there for the airbags in the seat, but I doubt the sensors are. It might be worth a call to 13FORD and ask the question.

You would want to be VERY careful when playing with airbags as they can go off with static or residual electricity, so just plugging them in with the battery connected could result in a discharge. Remember they are explosives and should be handled with extreame caution.

Yep, we did.

I helped Graham do the swap, and I was very wary of this side airbag problem. There were no extra plugs or pins that I could see, only a additional earth strap that had to be connected to chassis on the drivers seat only.

I told Graham if the re-flash doesnt work, you might just have to cut the wires to the airbag, and just imagine they weren't there...... I know its a waste, but at least the remaining airbags will work as per normal. This is or course a last resort.

Well, I tried ringing 13FORD and ended up getting put through to another dealer in Canberra!! :tease:

Anyway, as luck would have it, I spoke to a knowledgable chap in their service department. He was very cagey about the whole thing (obviously very worried) but admitted that it was 'technically' possible just to reflash the BCM and tell it that the car now had side airbags. He said the wiring looms were the same from the factory whether the car had them or not. :spoton:

But, and this is now my problem, he said that they wouldn't reflash it 'cos of liability issues. He said he did not know the condition of the airbags, etc, and if Ford were to reflash it and they didn't go off, they would be liable. I see his point but come on, I'm actually moving forward by trying to have more airbags! His advice was to have the airbags removed by an auto trimmer!!! :tease::roflmbo:
