Can't the tuner get the boost to come on harder with the factory unit??

So what this item does is allow the turbo to build boost faster as there is no bleed off from the factory solenoid to the wastegate unit. Is that how it works?

I've read thru the manufacturers info several times and I really don't get what they are on about, the concept of negative boost (or vacuum) is not relevant to what the wastegate is seeing, as vacuum only exists in the manifold after the throttle butterfly. Basically to me, it bleeds some of the positive pressure off the wastegate line, but I think it is spring loaded, so it rejects passing any pressure to the wastegate actuator until a preset level is reached (as set by the screw). So effectively negating some wastegate creep.

That's what I do with the Xede..

With edit you can set the effective duty cycle of the valve, but even when you set it at zero it still passes some pressure signal to the wastegate. This is what I found when playing during some of the intial set-up with Dave/Simon @ Nizpro. Same at the other end of the settings, ie 100% max boost maybe 20psi, with solenoid bypasses can be lower by 2-3 psi.

this unit is basically an adjustable pressure relief valve.Depending on how much pressure you set the internal spring too, is how much boost pressure is needed to open the valve and allow the waste gate actuator to see boost. Example if valve set to 10 psi, the wastegate actuator will not see any boost pressure until the valve sees 10 psi and opens. What this all means is that you wont have any wastegate creep below 10 psi.(There are other factors to consider such as flapper size and actuator spring pessure) but that's the basics of it.

"Boost controllers serve two functions; increase boost levels beyond the set wastegate spring pressure and reduce the "pre-opening" of the wastegate-controlled boost pressure.

A manual boost controller will allow you to increase boost levels beyond what the wastegate spring is set. How does it work?

In order to run a manual boost controller we need to tee off of the vacuum line which runs from the turbo compressor housing to the compressor reference port. The manual boost controller works using a spring and check ball, by screwing the adjusting screw into the boost controller you put more pressure on the spring which reduces the amount of airflow through the boost controller and into the boost controller port. Less airflow means less pressure will be assisting the spring to keep the wastegate plunger shut. The pressure in the vacuum line going to the compressor reference port will equal the pressure the turbo is producing. A boost controller will allow you to direct some of that pressure to the top of the wastegate diaphragm creating two opposable forces. By adjusting the spring pressure of the boost controller you can vary the amount of boost that the turbo will make before opening the wastegate's plunger. If you want to run a higher boost level than the wastegate spring allows you will need a boost controller."

Suppose a bloke had a BF phoon with Edit & custom tune...

What should I, I mean 'he' set the valve to for the stock tune (~9psi at max), and what should it be set to for his main custom tune (~13.2psi at max).

As for fitting, anyone got a handy pic??

Just fits inline to the boost signal to the electronic jobbie, from the compressor..

You will need a boost gauge. Settings are different for each car.

Just be carefull of spiking the boost.

Might be 'safer' to get it done on a dyno.. Or maybe get it set to 5psi.

It will stop the creep, and assist the factory unit, to a point, where the pcm then takes over..
