I agree with the statement of NextG having a limited range of handsets. But not for long !!!

I would like to clear up a few points….

• Telstra’s NextG network already covers 98 per cent of the population.

• They have an army of 120 engineers from Ericsson and Telstra who are making voice and data calls every 90 seconds to test voice/data quality and performance in over 60 vehicles ( Ford Territory’s of course ).

• Telstra has launched world-first field trials to increase peak network speeds on its new turbo-charged Next G™ network by about 300 per cent – to 14.4 Mbps – by early next year. ( Currently 3.6Mbps )

• Infrastructure used by 3 is actually owned by and constructed by a Joint venture between Telstra and Hutch Comm’s (3GIS Pty Ltd)

• The existing Telstra 3G network & “3” network are identical in coverage. In fact they use the same infrastructure.

• The Telstra NextG network however is unique to Telstra .

• My money would be with Telstra NEXTG.

You seem like someone in the know - is there more handsets in the pipeline? Specifically Sony Ericcson as I’d prefer to keep the same accessories.

SLVRXRT reply looks like what a Telstra stooge would write.

The NextG network does not cover 98% of the population, their existing CDMA/3G network does and they are replacing it with NextG, but 98% is many years away.

The handsets will have problems switching between the NG and 3G networks, it is a proven fact from a couple of USA network providers who are doing the same thing as Hel$tra.

14.4Mbps, is a pipe dream, it is like saying that Telstra ADSL will always give you 1.5Mbps/256k. It is a shared service and if you are in a CBD location, I bet you hardly will get broadband, it will also be a ripoff.

Telstra has a shocking record of getting things right, so I expect this will be like most Telstra products and over promise and severly under deliver.

Hel$tra should spend their money fixing their existing network, not try to build another mobile network that nobody wants or will use to its potential. Only 0.2% of people want broadband on their mobile, most people would just like to make a call without it dropping out.

Vodafone has the most amount of towers.

I use them and rarley have a dropout when on a call.

They also have really good plans form business and have provided me with excellent service.

Telstra on the otherhand have been nothing but arrogant and pathetic.

I'm guessing you say this meaning that you kept getting call drop-outs? That is due to the poor network switching of the handsets more than anything else.

Unfortunately 3's handset range/choice was (up to around 1 yr ago) somewhat poor and as a result alot of the handsets had trouble switching between 2G towers (Telstra) and 3G towers (H3G).

If you had a late model handset, you would more than likely find 3's service to be quite acceptable.

The “ Amount of Towers present” does not equate to better coverage.

Antenna’s can be mounted anywhere?, On and In Roof tops, street light pole’s, bridge’s etc,etc …the list goes on…. and on….

As for hand off between NextG and 3G… It would be pointless, Where ever there is 3G, NextG is present.

yeh I had a few problems with Three - a lot of dropout problems (Moto A1000), other times it just wouldn't get through at all and other things..

I had 2 broken screens on the phone which were a nightmare to get replaced even though they werent physically damaged or from water - just failed after the phone reset itself, which it did very often.. Three just did not want to know about it.. when they finally agreed to give me a new phone, it arrived and it was second hand and in worse condition than my one..

Once a month for 21 months I would get a phone call saying the bill is overdue, then when I would get home the bill would be in the mailbox that day or the next saying it was due in 2 weeks time or something.. then the next day I would get an overdue letter.. this combined with call dropouts, no network access etc was just ridiculous...

Im probably being a bit unfair on Three since half the probs were handset issues too.. but still, out of all of them telstra were the best IMO.. but I guess they all have their +'s and -'s
