I honestly believe one the brightest things which the government/department of transport  has proposed in a long, long time is for all P platers to have to undergo a compulsory defensive driver training program. I would have loved to have done one.  :spoton:

Yep and take it to the next level Advanced driver training :spoton: Guess what you can still stack it :pinch: But this thread proves that age, ability and belief surpasses everything :tease:

Spot on with that.. Now this test would realy distinguish good drivers from bad ones, and keep the bad ones off the road.

That should see the road casualties decline :spoton:

I notice comments about "I know my ability and the capability of my car, so I know how hard I can push it".. well that's utter BS. Unless you're on the track, then your ability, and your cars ability counts for very little on a public road. You can't control any variables except for your driving... kid jumps out, mum walks out, drunk stumbles onto road, driver doesn't see your 'faster then normal car'.. there are endless, scenarios that can unfold that mean jack sh*t of your ability... Doesn't matter how good you are, if you're speeding and something happens you will not have enough time to react safely...

I'm no saint, but I barely speed anymore... and if I do its maybe 90 or so in an 80 zone or something like that.. of course you give the car the odd squirt that's why we have them, but its about risk management. And the public road is always a big risk.

As much as I agree with that, part of me wonders how many young drivers will then become even more over confident... its all well and good to do a controlled slide at a driver training day on a huge bit of ashpalt, but the road is different. of course not everyone is going to get that attitude, but it does happen.

Personally, part of the reason I don't speed or belt my car is because I don't trust my abilities in controlling the car in a bad situation.

At the end of the day though, like guns... people kill people with cars.. its not the car, its the person behind the wheel. Normal commodores and falcons worth no more then $2500 are more then capable of reaching high speeds on the open road... in fact, most 4 cyl cars can do it too..
