Hi, I'm thinking of fitting a different intercooler which the only mod is a cat back exhaust system. I only at present want to put it on for the looks, but as time goes on I will begin to add further mods.

My question is: can a aftermarket intercooler be run with the factory tune?

BA mkI? Probably not... It will overboost.

BA MkII onwards should be fine

Mines a MKII. It was off the very first of the MKII's built. What was the difference between MKI & MKII. Was it valve springs, as I don't think my MKII got them. Or was it due to Ford's ECU settings?

I beleive all will overboost if intake or exhaust restrictions are removed

mk1 will be no diffrent than mk2 if it has latest update (ecu)  :spit:

Ok, let me rephrase it for our new resident expert.

In my experience...

My MkI ute FEB/03, rear muffler removed, ASE cooler, XEDE computer, Injectors, Unifilter rampod + 2nd CAI, latest and 'greatest' ECU flash. 300rwkw. Suffered overboost every so often at high altitude and cold nights.

My MkII sedan SEP/05, full X-force 3.5 exhaust, 3.5 dump, ASE cooler, Unifilter rampod + 2nd CAI, stock ECU. D-PIC estimated 210 rwkw. No overboost errors, so far.

I don't know much abotu this, but my brother has a 2003 XR6T Mark 1 with T5. It has SS Induction, K&N filter and rear muffler removed and replaced with straight pipe, and he added the Hybrid intercooler kit (larger cooler and new piping), and no problems. Since then he added the 2nd CAI (Typhoon style). And now a flash tune, he ran the generic 8psi without any issues, but once he tried the generic 10psi at about 4,000rpm it was going funny and the revs would drop out, pulled out the Iridium spark plugs, and fitted some regapped NGK standard type's, Capa told him the part number and gap setting, and said it's fine now.
