Panda Member 225 Member For: 20y 9m 23d Gender: Male Location: Gladstone, QLD Posted 12/10/06 08:27 PM Share Posted 12/10/06 08:27 PM I have had a few people ask if I would build them a carputer, and after working out a few bugs and niggles, I am satisfied that the reliability is of a high enough standard to sell to others.I've had a bit of a shop around on the internet and have tried to find the cheapest (but good) parts available. If anyone wants a carputer built and has an old PC laying around, I can recycle the parts if they are of any use. This is about how it will shape up -MinimumPSU Jaycar 250W $120 + for bigger PSUWiring / Plugs Various $75Case Custom $50Cooling Fan 1 x 12cm $20 + for ball bearingMotherboard ATX $75Processor P3 733 $50 + for faster processorRAM 256MB PC133 $75 + for more RAMVideo Card Arcade VGA $175Hard Drive 80GB IDE $100 + for bigger HDDExtra PCI CardsTV Tuner SD Digital Tuner $100 + for bigger antennaAudio Card Dolby 5.1 $75PCI USB card Generic $30Wireless Network D-Link $100 + for bigger antennaPCI Video Card For rear screens $100Optional AccessoriesSartup / Shutdown $100IRDA $50 + $20 for front mountUSB port $20 + $20 for front mountBackup Battery $75DVD Player $100 + $50 for front mountDVD Burner $200 + $50 for front mountGPS Receiver $125Reverse Camera $150On Board Diag. $300Input DevicesTouchscreen $250Cordless Keyboard $50Cordless Mouse $75ExtrasHidden PSU – add $20 (extra wiring)Hidden Carputer – add $20 (low profile cards, extra heat sinks)Front Mount- Power switch / USB / IRDA in tissue box area is an extra $20- DVD in tissue box is an extra $100More than 2 cards – add $20 (better motherboard)More than 3 cards – add $20 (extra cooling fan)More than 4 cards – add $100 (bigger PSU)RecommendationsMore than 2 cards – faster processorMore than 3 cards – more RAMThese are average prices not including postage, so the cost to me will be higher. For extra you could get a touch screen overlay or remote or keyboard - it's your choice how extravagant you want to goWill it boot in a safe modeI will have a basic startup controller - I.e. when you start the car, the carputer will start. It will not shut down automatically with this controller. For extra I can install a proper startup / shutdown controller which will turn it on when you unlock the car, and turn it off if you forget to before it drains the battery - it's your choice how extravagant you want to go... or have problems if it's not shut down before the car is turned offIf you forget to shut it down, it will flatten your cars batteryAny performance information available? ie G-tech style 0-100kmh, 0-400m etc.The On Board Diagnostics can be installed to give you this function, but as with everything else, that costs extraJust think of it as a normal computer - what you can do with the computer you are using at the moment, you can do in your car. It just depends on how much you want to spend.Panda

But the basic hardware needs to be there to add all the good stuff to it. You will be able to play MP3's, Movies that are stored on your hard drive and that's about it.So it's a big first step price wise to get the basics, and not a whole lot more for each of the upgrades after that. Basically (prices are estimates) it is -$750 for MP3, MPEG$850 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav$900 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav, Internet$1000 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav, Internet, DVD$1100 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav, Internet, DVD, In-car TV$1200 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav, Internet, DVD, In-car TV, On Board DiagnosticsEach add-on card costs a fraction of the base price, but without the base it can't be used.Panda

Just for the record, this is not a money making excercise for me. It's a hobby if anything. However I don't want to loose money.Panda

Also can it be transferred from vehicles upon a sale of a vehicle. Sorry if these are very basic questions but I really have no idea. Up until this thread I have pretty much ignored all other htreads on this type of topic, because A I did not understand it, and B thought that it could never apply to me.ScottyScotty
