I have had a few people ask if I would build them a carputer, and after working out a few bugs and niggles, I am satisfied that the reliability is of a high enough standard to sell to others.

I've had a bit of a shop around on the internet and have tried to find the cheapest (but good) parts available. If anyone wants a carputer built and has an old PC laying around, I can recycle the parts if they are of any use. This is about how it will shape up -

Minimum

PSU Jaycar 250W $120 + for bigger PSU

Wiring / Plugs Various $75

Case Custom $50

Cooling Fan 1 x 12cm $20 + for ball bearing

Motherboard ATX $75

Processor P3 733 $50 + for faster processor

RAM 256MB PC133 $75 + for more RAM

Video Card Arcade VGA $175

Hard Drive 80GB IDE $100 + for bigger HDD

Extra PCI Cards

TV Tuner SD Digital Tuner $100 + for bigger antenna

Audio Card Dolby 5.1 $75

PCI USB card Generic $30

Wireless Network D-Link $100 + for bigger antenna

PCI Video Card For rear screens $100

Optional Accessories

Sartup / Shutdown $100

IRDA $50 + $20 for front mount

USB port $20 + $20 for front mount

Backup Battery $75

DVD Player $100 + $50 for front mount

DVD Burner $200 + $50 for front mount

GPS Receiver $125

Reverse Camera $150

On Board Diag. $300

Input Devices

Touchscreen $250

Cordless Keyboard $50

Cordless Mouse $75

Extras

Hidden PSU – add $20 (extra wiring)

Hidden Carputer – add $20 (low profile cards, extra heat sinks)

Front Mount- Power switch / USB / IRDA in tissue box area is an extra $20

- DVD in tissue box is an extra $100

More than 2 cards – add $20 (better motherboard)

More than 3 cards – add $20 (extra cooling fan)

More than 4 cards – add $100 (bigger PSU)

Recommendations

More than 2 cards – faster processor

More than 3 cards – more RAM

These are average prices not including postage, so the cost to me will be higher. Like I said earlier, all of the suppliers are different in their list price / postage / bulk discount etc.

The average will be around $750 + postage. Of course, bigger and better is dearer. I can install this for you, but I live in Gladstone, CQ.

Anybody interested? Any questions just ask.

What software does it come with and how is it accessed? I.e through a touch-screen, or IR remote, or keyboard?

Silly question: Will it boot in safe mode or have problems if it's not shut down before the car is turned off?

Any performance information available? ie G-tech style 0-100kmh, 0-400m etc.

What software does it come with
All standard or freeware software -

Operating System - Windows XP SP1

Front End - Roadrunner

Audio player - Winamp Media Player

DVD Player - Power DVD

how is it accessed
The cheapest way is with a wireless mouse. For extra you could get a touch screen overlay or remote or keyboard - it's your choice how extravagant you want to go
Will it boot in a safe mode
I will have a basic startup controller - I.e. when you start the car, the carputer will start. It will not shut down automatically with this controller. For extra I can install a proper startup / shutdown controller which will turn it on when you unlock the car, and turn it off if you forget to before it drains the battery - it's your choice how extravagant you want to go
... or have problems if it's not shut down before the car is turned off
If you forget to shut it down, it will flatten your cars battery
Any performance information available? ie G-tech style 0-100kmh, 0-400m etc.
The On Board Diagnostics can be installed to give you this function, but as with everything else, that costs extra

Just think of it as a normal computer - what you can do with the computer you are using at the moment, you can do in your car. It just depends on how much you want to spend.

I have access to computers, bare bone systems, car PC's, and all manner accessories at a wholesale level. If any forum member is interested please PM me with what you want and how many and I'll give you a price...

...a price much cheaper than anyone can access retail.

Panda if you want to PM me and I'll be able to supply you the above much cheaper than you have listed.

An example of a good car pc has a footprint of 16.5x16.5x5.1cm this is a ready to go pc unit. I also have access to car pc units that are DIN mounting, suitable to fit underneath the ICC.

cheers,

Matt

Very interested......

So for $750 what exactly do you get on board as far as functions are concerned

The basic setup is very basic - it's just a computer. But the basic hardware needs to be there to add all the good stuff to it. You will be able to play MP3's, Movies that are stored on your hard drive and that's about it.

So it's a big first step price wise to get the basics, and not a whole lot more for each of the upgrades after that. Basically (prices are estimates) it is -

$750 for MP3, MPEG

$850 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav

$900 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav, Internet

$1000 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav, Internet, DVD

$1100 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav, Internet, DVD, In-car TV

$1200 for MP3, MPEG, Sat-Nav, Internet, DVD, In-car TV, On Board Diagnostics

Each add-on card costs a fraction of the base price, but without the base it can't be used.

Excellent, if I can buy the parts cheaper, I can sell the finished unit cheaper

Can you PM or email or post the prices for all of the components - I have no issues with you posting the prices here.

Just for the record, this is not a money making excercise for me. It's a hobby if anything. However I don't want to loose money.

Mate how does all this get dispalyed, Ie is only for premium sound packages or can a base model XR6T use this product. Also can it be transferred from vehicles upon a sale of a vehicle.

Sorry if these are very basic questions but I really have no idea. Up until this thread I have pretty much ignored all other htreads on this type of topic, because A I did not understand it, and B thought that it could never apply to me.
