Guest 56Mainline Guests Posted 17/07/03 12:25 PM Share Posted 17/07/03 12:25 PM Last Tues did the following:1st: Dyno with stock exhaust.2nd: Remove centre muffler & replace with straight pipes then dyno again.3rd: Replace modified stock exhaust with 3" performance system & high flow cat, then dyno again.4th: turfed the 3" system & put the modified stock exhaust back on!!Dyno runs done on a MDX Dyno complete with weather station, so dyno results were for corrected Power & Torque to ISO standards. The 3" system did give improvements in both rwkW & torque right across the rev range, but at only around half (!!!) of the improvement achieved by the modified stock system. The replacement of the centre muffler with 2x 2.25" pipes resulted in the following (and note that the car is stock in all other aspects, and is a manual sedan with 4300kms on the clock):* Power and torque are up right across the rev range.* Peak power was up by 14rwkW at around 5000rpm, and torque at peak power was up by 55Nm.* Mid range power was up by a maximum of 21rwkW (approx 2800 to 3500rpm).*Bottom-end through to 3000rpm saw torque increase between 70 and 80Nm. And you notice it when you drive her!* The computer controlled rev limiter now cuts in earlier. It was around 300~400rpm earlier with the modifed vs stock exhaust when on the dyno.* The greatest difference/improvement is in the lower to middle rev range.....where it is useable! The exhaust note is definitely louder, & I don't know about 1.5dBA!?! If my increased noise is only 1.5dBA, I'm glad I didn't shoot for 2dBA!At idle it is now obvious that this car may have a point to prove. The note quietens down a bit (compared to the note at idle) with gentle, 'normal' acceleration.A bit more heavy footed, and the exhaust loudens-up real quick. Then, you get serious & stick the boot in....& people are goin' to do neck injuries! No way would this pass ADR!As I've said elsewhere....with the stock exhaust, windows up, rubber liner & sound proofing in the boot, & Fairmont boot lid liner.....I couldn't hear the exhaust either at moderate acceleration from rest nor at highway cruisen speeds. But not now! Even at highway cruise you can hear it, & need to increase the radio volume a couple of notches to compensate. If it was any more intrusive some would consider it to drone. But one of the nicest bonuses is the lovely burble I now get when I back off the loud pedal at anything above 2800 rpm. Sweet! Now that I can truely hear the exhaust, I am now tending to put the boot in more offen. But the surprise is that my fuel economy has actual improved over the past 200kms since the exhaust change was done! Go figure! Guest 56Mainline Guests Posted 17/07/03 12:44 PM Share Posted 17/07/03 12:44 PM My pleasure. Nice to give back in return for all that I already received!I also am not sure if I can live with the highway cruising noise long term. The exhaust note elsewhere is OK, but highway cruising? Time will tell.....Then again, my wife now knows I've changed the exhaust (reading my last post as I wrote it, but has gone to bed now), & she will decide if WE can live with it!That may be all the reason I needed (planned for) to go for an APS improvment.... Zeke zeke Member 792 Member For: 21y 10m 3d Location: Adelaide Posted 17/07/03 02:18 PM Share Posted 17/07/03 02:18 PM From what I can gather, at least two different exhaust systems have found their way into Xr6t's. In about March 2003, they changed from a baffled centre muffler to a straight through type. Since then they have been obviously louder, both at idle and inside the car.I don't know if the rear muffler changed in any way at the same time. It would be great to find out what the exact changes were, why they were made and if the power increased as a result.Could also be the opportunity for some car to car swaps as some people seem to like the original system and I love the current sound. Just crossing my fingers that when mine arrives, it has the later version ie - that they haven't swapped back.Surely, some one out there is "in the know" about this and can give us some specific and detailed info? If the centre muffler has been changed (mine's a February build), it would be interesting to do a comparison as Mondie suggests.Methinks me have to do some work in the near future.
