Can Fuel Pump Cause Ping?

I was just after some info and opinions.

When I got my tune done it was ok for the first day and then the next day I filled up and started pinging. Killed that tank and tried diff fuel, still ping. Changed fuel filter, still ping.

I got 3 custom tunes and after detuning the car over 3 times to see if it would ping it still does. Then got a tune done to bring it right down nearly to stock and its all ok.

We put the air fuel O2 sensor on the car and with a mild custom tune flashed in took it for a spin and it is leaning out in 3rd gear and above when in the high rev range and starts to ping.

Would this be because fuel pump sort of sh*t itself the next day after the custom tune and now cant supply enough fuel and result in ping?

Im booked in for a new fuel pump but just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar problem.

Thanx

Nesh

OK,

Without pointing fingers or having a go at anyone, these are my experiances and opinions,

First up, Yes, a dud fuel pump can cause a car th "ping", due to low fuel pressure. this can happen because the higher boost on fuel rail pressure reg sensor line which in turn increases the releif pressure, which then can cause the the standard in tank pump to "go over releif", unfortunatly, these pump dont normally stop "going over relif" until you back off for a few seconds to allow the ball to seat and away you go.

If, and im only guessing, your tune comes on reall quick in boost and power, that can be enouigh to "spike" the pump and make it crap for alittle bit.

My other thoughts and notes are this, you can and will place more load on the road, especialy in a manual, (which wont kick back) than you will on a dyno, a Pwer run is over in about 3 seconds in third gear from 2000 to 6000rpm, on the road takes longer, which means more load, which mean more effort required to push 1800kgs through the air (not required on dyno), hence PING on the street.

it sucks, but you may need better fuel, or a less agressive timing or boost map for the street.

My first port of call would be to properly diagnose the fuel pressure drama (if one does exist), have your tuner hook up a fuel pressure gauge, take a passanger (dont try and watch it and drive) do a few runs at low speed high load, low speed low load and high rpm etc and watch what happens.

IF your fuel pressure drops anywhere below 4 bar under load, your pump is U/S, it should be between 4.5-5bar under load, you dont have to be doing a million KPH to do this test, you just need some boost and load, a gentle hill, 60 KPH and second gear, then floor it should do the trick.

ensure you have a FULL tank to eliminate fuel surge as opposed to fuel pressure drop, they are two different things.

I dont know of your other mods if any so I wont coment, feel free to add what you have done.

Nesh to my understanding your motor has had issues before the tune. Didnt you have a melterd spark plug or something before you tuned it? I think you will find that maybe another look over of your car is in order. Might just have been the fuel pump all along though :tease:

Fuel pump changed. Did a bit of a detune and doesnt seem to be pinging now, although there is a faint rattle of some sort in pretty much every gear. A microphone was hoocked up to hear if it was actually ping, it doesnt seem to be ping but something is rattling, could it be the box or heatshield?
