Okay, I do believe we have got to the bottom of this.

Firstly, to Dynowog, mate it has nothing to do with the tuning so you can leave that one alone. No need to start throwing :pinch: at other tuners/sponsors - simple as that. The thing has been running safe AFR's its whole life with no detonation and no pinging and yes, verified on a dyno, not just a road trip.

This should serve as a very timely warning to all of you with a fair bit of power and who actually use it from time to time. During a run a few weeks ago, I had two other guys in the car with me on a racetrack. I accelerated (flat to floor) in 3rd, then 4th, then 5th and then 6th. Can you imagine firstly the speed (yup, wound it off the 270 clock with overdriven wheels), but more importantly, the sustained force of acceleration and the absolute thirst of a 409rwkw car in these gears at this speed, a simple Walbro pump CANNOT keep the required flow up to the motor - even with nearly 3/4 of a tank of fuel, it is just beyond the flow rate of these pumps. That will explained why it felt like it starting running out of fuel at about 260km/h because it was - leaned out and detonation, hence one rooted plug and hopefully no damage to the motor.

The piece that came off was most likely vaporised instantly given combustion temps at that load.

So, let this be a warning to you all.

Best case scenario for me, this is a new motor and very tough pistons so hopefully no damage. It will be checked with an endoscope and a thorough leak down test in all six pots later in the week.

Worst case - I have destroyed a lot of $$$ (including a turbo) and it needs rebuilding after a mere 1300kms.

I have now a swirl pot kit on order from CAPA complete with Bosch 800HP fuel pump so fuel surge will be no more and I don't have to concern myself with fuel loads or running out of fuel at sustained loads.

So, lay off my tuner - this was a F%CK up by me, the ignorant owner not someone who really nows what they are doing.

Sorry to here this mate,

it is a warning to us all, even just abit lower grade fuel can distroy a good motor.

I think there is a lot pushing there luck with fairly poor fuel setups,

but even just a cloged fuel filter, can wreck the lot,

we have to watch out for any noises,

I hope it all works out for you, fingers crossed.

David

Thanks guys. Leak down test on Thursday morning, endoscope Saturday morning just for a piece of mind and I will remove the dump pipe just to satisfy myself and check the exhaust turbine blades. :pinch:

I have been invited to an LS1 dyno day on Saturday so would love this thing to be okay and attend to show what these things can do!

brain-dead owner who really should have known better - moron!

dw....moron (self confessed) you post up a pic of your plug melted due to detonation I then proceed to try and help you and tell you to get a retune not to come to me for one but get one!!! remembering no mention of surge in the posts to aid in diagnosis nor who the tuner was!!!!

dw....the pump is 255 litres per minute how much fuel do you use? pull the other one!!!!

The piece that came off was most likely vaporised instantly given combustion temps at that load.

dw....the peice did not break off it melted off gradually

So, let this be a warning to you all.

dw....well done

dw....till 15mins ago when I received a phone call I had no idea who your tuner was or that it was a mail order tune!!!! nor do I care simon does ok have no problems with him nor do I slag other tuners like they do me!!!!

moral of the story is if you ask for help give the whole story or don't ask at all!!!!

if you want to protect your tuner ask him first don't just post then ask questions later!!!!

last of all DON'T YOU DARE EVER TRY TO SAY I WAS SLAGING OR PICKING ON YOUR TUNER!!!!!

look forward to hearing back from shane as to what happened, the car had been run on the dyno and had safe af ratios, and had been checked for detonation so something has happened. .... changed .....

APOLOGIES SIMON as I did not know it was one of yours and as you can read I did not point fingers at tuners just get it retuned was the best advice I could give for the info that was available!!!

Dw - I posted up a pic of a plug and I didn't know what happened to it. I said I was investigating it.

As for the Walbro not being able to supply enough fuel under sustained load, I think I have proved by practical example that it can't, don't you think?

Get off your little high horse and I mean little one.

I wrecked a atomic motor it was from detonation but went from 1 tuner to another so not blaming anyone. brad has helped me out lots its just one of those things that happens I think. I would have avoided it if I could but hey cant do anything about it now

Rapid, nasty as the result is, I mean this in a sincere way, do you know what detonation sounds like?

I imagine at those speeds, with revs rising slowly, it would have been sustained, and very audible, even with the wind noise which would have been apparent?

I don't assume everyone knows what to listen for, I have been in a car when the owner floored it WOT and it sounded like someone going nuts in the engine bay with a sledgehammer and a bag of ballbearings!! He had no idea?? This was a fully built engine with Nizpro kit.

Hopefully at worst it's a sleeve and new piston.. ( can you get these sleeved?? )
