BBC motoring presenter injured in crash

Thursday Sep 21 06:43 AEST

AP - The host of a BBC television show about automobiles was critically injured when the jet-powered car he was test driving at about 450 kph crashed, the network said.

The accident occurred when Richard Hammond, 36, the host of Top Gear, was racing the car down a runway at an unused Royal Air Force air field near York city in northern England and it overturned, police and the BBC said.

Hammond, who often drives high-performance cars for the show, was rushed in an air ambulance to a hospital in Leeds.

The accident occurred while he was filming for a future show.

A bit more:

At approximately 5:45pm on 20 September 2006 Richard Hammond was critically injured in a car crash while filming for Top Gear at the former RAF Elvington airfield near York. He was piloting a rocket powered dragster capable of travelling at 300mph in an attempt to break the UK land speed record. He is being treated at the specialist neurological hospital Leeds General Infirmary and is currently in a critical condition. [2] BBC reports suggest that he was air-lifted from the crash scene unconscious and taken to the specialist neurological unit at Leeds General Infirmary. The ambulance service is reported to have said Richard began to regain conciousness upon arrival at the hospital. This has conflicted with witness statements given to the BBC from Top Gear production crew, which stated that Hammond walked away from the crash and was helped into an awaiting helicopter. [3] North Yorkshire Police have said that they "received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield." [4]. This again contradicts the reports that he walked away from the crash.

Sky News reports that he was driving a Vampire rocket car powered by a Rolls Royce Orpheus Jet Engine; the very same car that currently holds the landspeed record at 300.3mph [5]

Various news sources say that Richard's family are on their way to the hospital in Leeds where Richard remains in a critical condition in intensive care.

Get well, Hamster! :spoton:

BTW, he should get some extra teeth whitening while he's in hospital... just to continue getting up Clarkson's nose while he's off the air! :crybaby:
