In this day of electronics it can be very difficult to pin point the problem without diagnostic equipment.You can rule out the box cause that works correctly in every other respect. There would be a couple of sensors in the shifter which would be my first port of call.Unless someone else has had this problem and can tell you what fixed it, (that is if Ford cant/wont/dont know yet how to fix it), it might just be one of those things you have to live with for a while.
