Some injection molded plastics are more impact resistant than alloy or mid steel. Is the damage issue more to do with the position/design or shape than the material used? If that is the case, it wouldn't matter what it was made out of.On my dirt bike I switched from an allow bash plate (under the front of the motor and cops a big pounding from logs and rocks, direct impacts at speed). The plastic plate is a lighter injection moulded piece and absorbs much more than the alloy unit which would often bend or crack around the mounts from the impacts. I was a bit wary at first, but I wouldn't go back now. The plastic plate can certainly cop more of an impact than the bare alloy engine case could hold up to.It's funny that this issue doesn't seem to arrise on the VWs, Austin Martins or Audis. Does the ZF come with the plastic cover or does Ford fit it?

As you'd probably already know, there are a few bits and pieces on these car's that are crap, and seem to be there purely as a cost saving measure. The plastic is hard injection moulding and certainly more impact resistant than alloy which is easy to crack. It is straight edged and hangs down and would be an easy spot to hit on any high points on the ground. It is more likely that the plastic cover has been used to be more damage resistant than a cast alloy cover. It would certainly stand up to more scrapes that way. You've all got to get this image of a thin bit of milk bottle plastic out of your heads. What's cheaper than leaving the cover that came with the box?
