I made the trip out to Warwick today and got Mal Wood to fit one of his Short Throw Shifters and shortened gear sticks to the Phoon. All I can say is Mal's units are a work of art. I cant believe the difference with the gear changes. I took the car for a drive after it was finished and was flicking through the gears using 2 fingers. My only regret was the trip back to Brisbane on the open road where I didnt get much of a chance to play with the gears. I can highly recommend Mal's units to any one looking for a short throw shifter, great job Mal.

Cheers

Jeff

Thanks for the review Jeff, only heard great things about these units.

New tyres, Bilstein shocks and a Mal Wood shifter are my next planned upgrades for serious :smilielol:

Hi Tweakn,

Best off talking to Mal about shortening yourself.

Ive had the Mal Wood short Throw shifter fitted for 4 days now, done a fair bit of driving, this is my summary:

1. Still using 2 fingers to change gears (cant help it, it's just fun using it like this)

2. Prior to fitting, I had what sounded like linkgage clunking when changing gears, that has now disappeared, its as quiet as a mouse.

3. Absolutely no chance of missing 3rd, using 2 fingers I just flick forward from second and it finds its own way to 3rd gear.

4. All gears seem to grab tightly, its hard to explain but as soon as it grabs, you just know its in and wont pop out of gear.

5. Shortened gear stick (reduced by 25mm) is the perfect height, I didnt realize how bad the other one felt until I drove with this done.

6. Absolutely no wrestling with gear locations, especially when sticking the boot in and changing gears quickly.

Summary: With all the mods Ive done, I wish I had done this one first. Its a different car to drive, highly recommend. Once again, awsome unit Mal.

I like. The bane of my manual shifting is getting into 2nd really quickly (unless I wrench hard to make sure).

Mal, can you recommend someone in the Canberra/Sydney area for fitting (or should I just go to Ford)? I'm in Canberra until late Nov, then I'll be living in Adelaide from then on.
