Quiet 18" Tires?

Well I finally picked up my Typhoon, an ex-demo (11000km) manual Vixen Red BA-II. Looks great and good fun to drive. The only downside is that it is significantly noiser than my old car (1997 EF2 XR6) so I'm on a mission to soften the noise where I can.

The most annoying noise is whine/road noise from the tires. It has the stock Dunlop SP9000s on it (18" wheels). They are probably a little less than half worn but have probably had a pretty hard life - I think I will keep them for drive days. The goal is to replace them with quieter tires for everyday driving. They still need to have decent grip though - particularly in the wet! These cars have too much power to risk anything but quality tires.

So, anyone got any suggestions? I have read good things on this forum about Yokohama Advan Sport V103s being quiet but I'm open to any suggestions...

Hi,

I am running the Sports Maxxs by Dunlop (245/40/18 on the F6), and despite them being slightly quieter than the 9000s, they are still fairly noticeable noise wise. However, they out grip the 9000s in all weather conditions so im happy, and they were only 380 a piece instead of 480! I have been told that the V103s are an excellent tyre but were a little lower in the treadwear rating which turned me away, 180 vs 240 for the Sports Maxxs, And as I drive mine daily, and do approx 20000 - 23000 km per year, it does get costly for good tyres. I only got 14000 out of my rears 9000s, must have been coz of the track day..

At the time of purchasing mine, I wanted to try the Michelin Pilot Preceda 2's, however Michelin would not ship them to SA as they wanted to clear old stocks of the PP1's, and as the 2's were obvioudly much better than the 1's, I went dunlops. The Michelins are meant to be a great tyre also, and are comparable to the Pilot Sports 2's, which are over $700.00 a piece, so may be worth looking at..

Hope I have helped..

Cheap and nasty? Not in my opinion. I used to run Wanli S1099 tyres on my SS in 235/40/18, cost me well under $200 a corner and whilst not the ultimate performer they were quiet and gripped pretty well and wore well.

Commuter they do ok, but I wouldnt track the suckers.

I used to run SP9000's on my old EL XR in 17's. Having them now on my BA I remember ALL the reasons as to why I wont replace them with 9000's every time I hear that noise....

Mate if you want a quiet tyre, Michelin make the quietest in the world.

They are also the best performing.

Michelin Pilot Preceda 2, or Michelin Pilot Sport 2.

I just purchased the Sport Max in 245/40/18 and as a new tyre they are quieter than the SP9000. Again time will tell if they are any better as they are new.

I paid $420 per boot which was the cheapest I could find so bangm001 done well for $380 per boot.

In terms of mileage, I got 41500km out of teh SP9000 so am hopeful I will get the somewhere close to that.

Also for those looking for a 16" tyre, I got a set of GoodYear Excelence 205/55/16 for our Honda Euro and they are a great tyre. Quiet, good grip and yet to see how they go in the wet. Price wise, the cheapest I could find was $216 per boot.

Cheers

Clay

Thanks for the answers so far... anyone else want to comment? Still keen to hear from anyone who actually has tried the Advan V103s.

Michelin Pilot Preceda 2, or Michelin Pilot Sport 2.

Thanks - have you tried either of them on a Typhoon or an FPV with similar chassis/wheel size/etc?

You forgot to mention the outrageous price of them aswell :) (awsome tyre though)

If you are wanting a quiet tyre, that you dont have to sell your left nut to get. Try Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's

I have the Yoko Advan Sport V103s and they are a HELL of a lot quieter than the SP9000s that I replaced!

They are still not "super quiet", but they are a hell of a lot better! On a scale of 1-10, if the SP9000s are a 10, the V103's are around a 6.5-7 depending on road surface.

Cheers,

Ross
