pretty sure in the book it says to run atleast 95 octane doesn't it?

Pretty sure? Never said it couldn’t, he was just offering input based on what he thought was right. He did not say YOU CANNOT RUN 91RON

If you own a Turbo I would not run 91 at ALL. Best you do some research on how this could do damage to your engine internals. I would think the engine would ping and rattle on 91 and I'm sure your manual says to only use 95 or 98 Ron.

This bloke is offering advice. Recommending that you don’t run 91, and again saying he’s pretty sure the manual stipulate 95 or 98.

By the way, for a BA Ford says 95 as a minimum.  For BF they gave the motor a bigger adjustment range for the VCT (full 60 degrees) allowing drivers to 'safely' run 91, but they still recommend using 95.

Well f*ck me, perhaps this clarifies it you clown.

You might get away with 91 if you drive it gently. But then why not sell the T and get a Prius?

I run BP Ultimate in my NA XR6 - get half the cost back in better economy, plus more power.

tab, not looking to start something mate, but the way I read the manual (or at least the piccie that Bain posted) was that you CAN use 91RON fuel? :sick:

It said that, for all petrol vehicles, you should only use unleaded petrol (bolded, presumably to clarify that this is a 'definition') with a minimum octane rating of 91.

Then it goes on to say that, for the XR6 Turbo only, premium unleaded petrol with a minimum octane rating of 95 is recommended (my emphasis) for maximum performance.

And then the clincher (for me anyway), it says that the XR6T is also calibrated to run on unleaded petrol - I take this to mean that it CAN use 91RON fuel, even though it is not recommended.

BTW, I only use 98RON, so this is a moot point for me anyway!! :spoton:

Running 91 wont hurt the car but will hurt the performace and as most of us have bought these cars for that, then why would you bother. If you are looking to penny pinich buy an Xr6 NA.

Read some where that there is no point running Ethanol fuel to save money as the the saving in price does not make up for the economy lost

The simple answer to the question is you will not damage your car if using 91 RON fuel on a standard tune.

Even an edited car will not lean out & detonate if tuned to that fuel, unless the person tuning it leans out the A/F.

Think about this one, the stock fuel system is good for another 20% increase, do you really think changing from 98 RON to 91 RON the fuel system won't handle it???

All the other crap about "sell your car if you can't afford it" bla bla bla, is just that, crap!

You need to weigh up the economics of it, is an octane increase of of 8% going to give you 10% or better fuel economy??? I doubt it!

A 50k difference per tank (something I have acheived in my previous non-turbo XRs between 91 and 98 ron fuel) is about a 12.5% improvement in fuel economy.

A car club I was involved with a few years back ran a test between some members and various cars, looking at fuel economy gains (under normal,everyday driving conditions) and every car showd an improvement in economy (some marginal same large). It averaged out that premium would have to be over 10c/ltr dearer before 91 became cheaper at the pump. Factor in the fact that premiums tend to be cleaner and cleaner burning, you then have lower servicing costs with injector cleaning, etc. The added performance was only really tested on my EL XR6 which showed a 5kw gain at the wheels on 98.

Because of the variances in the test, I'd suggest you try it out for yourself to see how you car reacts as all cars and driving styles vary. You'll need to run the car through a full tank of the fuel you are testing and start your test on the second tank (to ensure any mixed or residuals of the other fuel is used up). Note how many ltrs/100km you manage on each tank as well as the total kms travelled per tank.

Don't rely on other people to tell you what fuel is better, test it for yourself.

As far as I'm aware there is a difference between "can't" and "recommend"

I'd never run anything less than 100 R.O.N fuel in any of our car's. As said, your 4 cylinder fuel budget is better left for your 4 cylinder.
