Not bad for $3500. ←Yep it's mine and Nitto are at this moment making a thicker gauge plenum, but to be fair to them they did not design it to run at 400rwkw + and around 30psi boost. WAY too thin to be completely comfortable with imo.

The velocity stacks are te right idea too. If it was made of thicker material, it's not as easy to bend etc, unless it's annealed, but still do-able. Mine is based on my theory of relativity. How relativly easy it will be..lol. Very simple design, and what fits nicely. Volume, I have no idea yet.. At the moment it's only a top half replacement. I'm waiting on some materials for a complete lower half change, but that will be a completely different designed top half..The only thing I'm doing differently is trying to increase velocity, as opposed to just upping the volume. It might not work, but it can't be too much worse than the stock one if all else fails.... fingers crossed.

Love seeing people coming up with their own stuff. Are all the runners different lengths (eg tuned length).I was also told (so dont shoot me down cos I dont know) that the BA responded well with out the bellmouth runners. EB may be different! I got no idea with these plenum design!TOP JOB!

But I read on the other post about this same plenum that it is made from 3 mm Al plate. Given the large surface area and the load characteristics of a turbo engine, ie up to say 30 psi boost one minute and -30in Hg next the dynamic loading can play havoc with sheet metal manifolds. If you watch one on a dyno you can see the deflection in the walls of the manifold. That is why OEM manifolds have thick cast walls as a minimum 6-8mm thick. Therefore I would ask what internal ribbing has been used to strength this manifold. Rob's (Mr Turbo) manifold is made from S.S so it is mechanically more rigid. The reasons I ask is I have seen a number of similar manifolds that fail, either with stress cracks (most minor) or major blow-ups (at the drags), and I wouldn't want someone who obviously cares a lot about their car have to experience that situation.CheersRobin.←Agree with ya Robin! Here is a pic of my plenum for the members who havnt seen it before.Rob...

In most instances 3mm is fine, easy to work with and cheaper (still expensive) to buy.6mm is an way overkill IMO (I original thought about using 6mm) but after looking into it I reckon 4mm should cope fine for high boost on the above shown manifold. Only the big TIGs will do 6 or 10mm ally also. Most small tigs do 3mm.

Especially when you're not paying $1600-$3500 for a branded item..
ebs_4l Member 16 Member For: 18y 3m 4d Posted 04/09/06 11:25 AM Author Share Posted 04/09/06 11:25 AM (edited) I beleive 3mm is fine, I will pressure test one to be sure, but like I said, my manifold is made from the same stuff, and has an area probably double the largest flat area of this plenum, it is tough, and hasnt caused any problems with 17psi... as for the big dollar plenum blowing up like a balloon, I have looked at the photos of it, and my opinion is that it is most likely made from very thin material?? considering its shape, even if it is made with a 3mm wall thickness, which I wouldnt think it would be, it is most probably made from a lower grade alloy, that is commonly used in all hammerforming techniques, it is more malleable/softand also, xlnt6 stated that mr turbos plenum is made from s.s so it is mechanically more rigid... I beg to differ, that plenum is certainly made from alloy.we have a cigweld 200A inveter tig, its an awesome piece of gear to have in your back shed.. does 6mm no worries, I weld the plenum with 100-110A.. it has full digital controls, gaslens nozzles, and a swivel/flexible head.. cost $7.5k with all our accessories Edited 04/09/06 11:30 AM by ebs_4l
