I was having a chat to a mate the other day about how much a hot ambient temperature can affect a cars performace, particularly turbo cars.

I ended up thinking of an article I read in MOTOR magazine a year or so ago, in which I am sure someone wrote an article explaining that the XR6 turbo actually increases boost pressure in hot ambient temperatures to maintain consistant performance.

Obviously, cooler air is great because it's denser, but hot air is a problem because at the same boost levels you are forcing in less air than usual.

I can't find any mention of this anywhere, so I'm beginning to think that I am crazy, but I was wondering if some knowledgeable person could tell me if I remember correctly or if I'm pulling something out of my imagination.

I would expect the exact opposite. Can you imagine Ford designing a system that would cause a car to ping?

You are not crazy (at least not based on the above :spoton:), I remember the article, and it was a desert test of the F6 and I think other FPV models, and somewhere in the article they did say that the boost increased as the temperature went up.

I can probably find the article if someone disputes this.

Not sure if it in fact true, but that's another story :spoton:

I don't think the question is that power reduced as the density of air decreases with temperature - more that you wanted someone to confirm that a motor magazine article made the statement that the F6 engine management system accounted for hotter temperatures by increase boost (to maintain the same amount of oxygen available for combustion)

That's what you wanted to know right?

Dohh and my next mod was an I/C. What was I thinking :spoton:

You're on the right track here matey.... You are NOT a fool.

A larger IC WILL help to keep the charge air temp down, and hence you will maintain a better performance in hotter conditions, and also during sustained boost conditions (as in circuit racing).

ALL cars have a performance drop as ambient air temp increases.

As to whether the F6 increases boost to compensate ..... no idea.

The ECU takes in a lot external parameters to make its decisions.

Yep mildman, that's what I was curious about. The idea makes perfect sense to me, but I can't find any information on it..only my hazy recollection of the MOTOR article.

I'm glad someone else thinks they have seen it.

Ninka, would you be able to find the article and post it here? That would be a massive help.
