I have read about these pagers. They look like a good idea, and cheap. $90 for a little lcd screen displaying the car and indicating what part has been bumped or tampered with etc. Only thing is, if you get just the pager by itself, then you still have to use the Ford keypad to open the doors/boot etc. So on top of having your car key, the Ford keypad, and all your other keys, you have this additional pager.

I am considering one, however the guy I spoke to rekons to keep it on ya belt otherwise it gets scratched with all your keys and stuff. The range is anywhere from 800 meters to 1.5km, and considering I usually aren't that far away from the car anyway (too lazy to walk!), and most people don't react to alarms, this may be a good idea.

my 2c.

I've heard about a system that assigns a moblie phone number to the car. If the car is violated, it rings your moblie phone. If you call the car's number it tells you that status.

Sounds strange, but maybe some of you know the details.

I'm just setting up an agency to handle these - if anyone is interested in details please PM me with your email address - it is a really good system and allows you total control over your vehicle including disabling it.

I got an aftermarket 'Upgrade' alarm system with 2 stage perimeter sensor and auto window lift. Its good cause you don't need a seperate remote, it just uses the factory one.

Is this on your BA? Do you mind me asking how much? and how much for installation? and where you got it done? Thanks.

My son is in the security industry, and installs mainly commercial premises - security systems, (Big Access Control systems, and the like).

He is also a licensed Quicktrak Installer, and Installs many other auto brands as well, to a swag of different cars.

Anyway, speaking to him with regards to security for the Falcons,

The Smartsheild system (Fitted to Late AUI models) is very good at outright theft prevention.

But does bugger all to prevent a thief from vandalising, or stealing bits from the vehicle.

Which, he said is the most common form of vehicle theft.

I purchased the Factory alarm system for my Falcon, as my son wasnt exactly sure when he could install an alarm for me. (I wanted an alarm the first day I picked it up, as I have very unfriendly neighbours, if you catch my drift  )

Anyway, he didnt have too many kind words to say in regard to the "Factory" alarm system. (I.E. the sentry add on model).

He immediately located the alarm module, as well as the shock sensor, and said that he could have diasbled the alarm system completely within 15 seconds.

Mind you he also said that the Battery Backup siren would sound for the first 5-10 seconds.

He mentioned that a poor alarm installation can be determined by the amount of effort used in "Hiding the components".

My alarm module was mounted right next to the steering column, and the Battery Backup siren was mounted out in the open, next to the brake booster on the engine bay.

He also said that you could get an equivelant Rhino alarm installed by pretty much anyone, for roughly $300.

Finally, he said that there is no such thing as a totally intergrated alarm system. Its more of a case of either tricking the car into thinking that a person is using a key, or in the case of the "add on" alarm modules, simply wiring them to the central locking lines, ignition lines, and door open lines.

Anyway, he is going to rip my factory alarm out, and fit one of those SMS paging alarm systems instead.

Ohhh, and in regards to cheaper insurance premiums, the alarm needs to be installed by a registered security company, with the technician holding a proper security Licence, and the alarm has to be Australian standards approved....

Even then, many insurance co.s consider the Smartsheild system more than adequate, and will not offer much, if at all, any discount in premium.

Just thought that I would add my 2c worth to the subject

Yep, in my BA XR6T I think it was around $800(installed) at BDL in Canberra.

Actually since you mentioned insurance. How stupid and backward is this! I asked RACV about fitting an alarm and if there was in premium reduction as a result...guess what the response was....your premium will go UP because you are adding to the value of the car!!??

I was interested in those SMS paging alarms before I heard about these LCD ones, but I wasnt keen on them after some research because I found that you at the very least have to have a SIM card in the alarm from Telstra or another providor ($$$), but in some, you need a complete mobile phone hooked into it which can add to the cost of the system if you dont have one laying around.
