Just wondering with the high rate of thefts of car's such as the WRX and now with the release of the XR6T being another "cult" car what alarm systems have you guys got installed or are planning on getting installed and the cost.

I have had a look at RhinoSystems Alarm which has tracking but not sure of how much it costs. Looks quite expensive..

I have gone with the Ford Alarm since it is meant to intergrate with the computer system. It doesn't matter which alarm they get taken anyway. The best defence for our cars are wheel locks and a top of the range Club lock. Either the Club LX or Club Premium. I saw on A Current affair that it took the theives over 30 Min to defeat the Club LX. The Club Premium is meant to be even better. Some locks only took 2 seconds to defeat. They used a sledge hammer to break it in the middle, a pipe to snap off the ends, a drill to defeat the lock. The Club LX was the best.

Food for thought.

I've been quoted on the Ford alarm but will also opt for a steering lock.

The more visual deterents the better.

I've also been told to try and fit steering locks with the lock facing the dash - harder to pick apparently?

That's why I live on the Gold Coast and have insurance - so I don't have to worry about alarms systems :D

Yeah, but too bad if your ride gets stolen and your waiting till mid next year to get another XR6T.

I think physical deterrants like the Club are far better than an alarm. When was the last time you ran to see what was going on when you heard the alarm going off?

The immobilizer is standard. I don't need a loud honking noise on top of that.

Though, I'd rather do what we used to do back in South Africa and coat the reverse side of the dash panels with blades and broken glass -- if anyone tried to reach under and grab the stereo or wiring loops -- hands cut to ribbons.

I won't be buying mine until demand subsides. Anyway, I'd be putting an alarm into the other car first as they've stopped making them which kind of makes it difficult to replace :P

Sadly, yes. The "hidden" protections in South African cars used to be vicious. I have actually seen cars with flame burners hidden under the doors to prevent car-jacking. If someone comes up to the car, hit the button and WHOOMP! Instant BBQ.

Other options are running live wires through the dash system hooked up to mega-caps and other fun things. There are anti-hijacking systems that require you to hit a hidden button within 30 seconds after starting the engine to prevent the entire thing shutting down (legal version) or sharp spikes from shooting out of the driver's seat cushion (slightly less legal version).

We get particularly creative when required. :) Car-jacking is such a problem in Johannesburg that the POLICE suggest not stopping at red traffic lights at night, just treat them as a yield sign.

OK now that we DONT want to go to South Africa.....

I got the Ford alarm - intergrated, no warranty probs, no service probs, cheap for what you get.

BTW a co worker is from South Africa. Not long after they emegrated, he was on a train with the family when it ran over those signal/warning caps that sound sorta like a gun shot. Apparently he stuffed the kids and wife under the seats and tried to shield them.....must be one scary place
