was flipping though the repco catalogue and was reading the caption for an oxygen sensor. it reads:

"Oxygen sensors need to be replaced on a regular basis as they start to wear out from day one.... replacing an oxygen sensor can:

increase engine performance

improve fuel economy

reduce harmful emissions"

is this true? the reason im asking is because alot of us get poor fuel economy. mine being a second hand car seems to get the worst mileage ever (about 370km).

I have just replaced my HEGO (oxygen) sensor, and the fuel economy does seem to be improved.

Have not done enough k's yet to quantify by how much, but I managed almost 200k's (highway driving) before hitting the 3/4 mark, something I have never done before.

370 km's is about the mark for city driving mate, especially if you give it a squirt now and then. If you are really concerned about your economy, catch a bus or drive a 4 cylinder. If your oxygen sensor was stuffed, you will probabally get worse economy then that.

I have a friend who has just had the oxy sensor replaced on their Subaru Turbo - it was running way too rich. Too rich = using too much fuel in my book.

Similar in my old EB XR8 - that was replaced - used less fuel, went better.

I reckon you should get more than 370k from a tank. My Manual mk2 (6 speed) going to and from work - mainly on highway, but in heavy traffic - average of 50km/h usually gets 470 - 500, driven fairly hard.

So... how much are they? worth a shot?

What heavy would you have in NZ 10 to 15 min? :smilielol:

Well - true, there isnt as much traffic here as in Aus, but are road systems are much crappier as well. I travel about 40km to work - usually takes around 40 minutes.

Anyway - check your average speed. At around 50km/h average, normal tank lasts 470km in my car.

average speed of 42km and my fuel economy is well 480-490 out of a tank being sensible.

02 sensors last a while, I dont think there is any1 with a T that has done enough kms to justify changing it

The friends Subaru had done around 40,000 k - and their 02 sensor was stuffed - I dont think they all behave the same.
