Modification Options

Thanks for the response guys,

I may go the flange option so I can refit it if required. As per my sig I have a 2.3Lt engine with twin 48mm Webbers with big exhaust in my other toy. And I know how annoying cabin drone is when just cruising. The last thing I want to do is mimic that in a 2003 model car! :kissmy::huh:

The XR8 snorkal will be my other mod after my run in period expires. So hopefully I will get to enjoy the T more when the foot is firmly planted.

One question, with the mods to exhaust and intake does the factory chip need retuning or does it pick the diff in flow and adapt to it? Is it adviseable to get dyno'd?

Dave,has to be centre muff,get the flange jobie so you can back to stock anytime.

Some bloke went up in pipe size and got drone, so stay same pipe size, no drone.

Guys,

Removing the centre muffler definitely adds power. As for drone it's a subjective issue.... and I did go up in size to 2.5". The centre muffler does do a lot for noise reduction, which is why it's there. The approach taken was also to look at what can be done with the rear muffler to alter the sound, with some very good results today ... a very deep sound much like a V8.... but a few other major things have also been done. I'll write a paper next week on what's been looked at, as the work is not quite finished, but it's looks like another option.

FYI, here's a pic of the guts of the rear muffler.

Hi, I just wondered if anyone had fitted the APS chip and sprts Cat as per the car on their website and was in Motor and what they thought of the change in character of their car. Tim

What have you been doing, what with butchering the rear resonator?

I've got a new exhaust after the turbo dump pipe back, larger 3.5” down pipe, 3.5”high-flow new style cat with steel-mesh internals and ceramic coating (for higher gas temps & faster flowing gas), larger dual 2.5” diameter pipe all the way back, prototype rebuilt rear muffler to accommodate larger dual 2.5" pipe instead of the stock 2" pipe, so a very low restriction, free flowing exhaust…. It looks stock from the rear, as I’ve retained the rear tip, and it has a much sportier sound mid-range, overall a very deep sound. I drove from Sydney to Melbourne yesterday. The otherwise stock car feels like it comes on boost a bit quicker, is smoother and more responsive. At freeway (123kmph) speeds, 2800 revs, it is fairly quiet inside the car with no drone. This is a prototype exhaust, much better than standard, as I wanted a good exhaust set-up (and high-flow cat) before the major Nizpro upgrade that is happening now.

have you been getting any wastegate flutter just after cold start when you are warming it up a bit.

I was trying a 3.5 inch system for a company. it was a good sound and gave an extra 14 rwkw, but after a while it started with the wastegate flutter and I dicided to go back to stock for now.

No I did not notice a wastegate problem.

Moving forward, both my wastegate spring and blow-off valve are being replaced as a part of the upgrade.... to handle higher boost pressure.

I've had a number of wastegate problems in the past with others cars, however I wouldn't normally expect just an exhaust change to cause wastegate problems... having said that I don't know how weak the stock wastegate spring is, nor the extent of "wastegate creep". You can pressure test the wastegate actuator to see at what pressure it opens. (Don't ask me what is standard is). With other cars in the past I've had attempted remedies such as adjustable actuator arms, replaced items with stronger springs, cut/shorten/reweld actuator arms, and external wastegates.
