This is what Ford told me;

"Twin pot front calipers, front grooved discs 329mm x 28mm and rear grooved discs 287mm x 16mm with ABS.

Premium brakes would be Brembo brakes."

It is the same as what was available in the T series.

l agree, you cant have too much brakes. Went for side airbags also as a car can never be too safe!

This is my understanding:

All BA Falcons use a twin-piston aluminium calliper at the front and a single piston aluminium calliper at the rear. The diameter of the rotors has been increased, with the front ventilated rotor now measuring 298mm x 28mm (previously 287mm x 28mm). At the rear, the solid rotor is now 303mm in diameter and 16mm thick, up from 287mm x 16mm previously.

Premium brakes use 325x32mm ventilated and grooved rotors on the front and 303mmx16mm grooved rotors on the back.

Electronic Brakeforce Distribution backs up standard ABS on sedan and wagon (and utes where ABS is fitted)

The increased rotor size has delivered numerous benefits, including:

* Increased braking effectiveness

* Increased pad life

* Improved fade resistance

* Reduced brake temperature

* Lower pedal efforts

* Lowered ownership costs

Your info sounds more correct to me Richdave, especially given that Ford has increased the size of the standard disc rotors.

The sizes Ford quoted to me are identical to those for the T series and available as an option on the AU XR8 also. It took me a while to get the info l quoted from Ford and when l got it, it was incorrect. Just as well they have dessigned such an awesome car, because in other areas such as accurate info, they are lacking.

It's all a bit vague and disturbing. Surely for $2950 the package must have 4 piston front calipers at least ? It's WAAAY exxy if all you are getting is bigger rotors, I could do that myself with some help from DBA for a lot less money.

Bring on the Brembo's, they rule :D

Thanks for the link to the Autoweb article too Dave, it's definitely worth reading.

Cheers,

Paul.

Hi guys!

I have a picture of the optional premium brakes fitted to an XR6T, which was taken during the FordForums raid back in October. They are the same "swirl groove" rotors that were standard on the T3 series, and which were also the optional premium brakes on the AU3 XR series. The Brembos are not listed as an option for XR's, in fact the info I have is that they will be optional only on GT. Even the mighty GT will not get them standard! :unsure:

Premium brakes use 325x32mm ventilated and grooved rotors on the front and 303mmx16mm grooved rotors on the back.

And as advised by Ford Customer relationship team today, The Premium brakes are Brembo and the Calipers are 4 piston.

So there you have it. Is it worth the $3K? Only you can decide.

richdave - the consensus from those "in the know" is that the premiums aren't really worth it. Two of these opinions come from an FPV employee, and a proving grounds driver. :)

And as tasty as the Brembos are (if we're talking the T3 premium ones), they have the expensive habit of wearing very quickly :(

After reading your reply re: correspondence with Customer Relations, I made a call to a friend at FPV to confirmed that the XR premium brakes are as per the ones in the pic above, which he confirmed for me. :ph34r:

I hope I don't sound like a smartarse, just wanting to help out with the info I have! :lol:

Not at all, all contributions welcome :)

Maybe I dont know anything about brakes, but the pic posted looks just like any other Mag with a disk rotor behind it?? :ph34r:

Anyway, the question that started this post was along the lines of what do you get and is it worth it. Between a few of us we have determined what you get. I'll leave it up to the individual to decide if it's worth the money. I'm not getting them though... ;)

They are 17" tyres and rims if I made out the size label on the tyre correctly, so that can't be the premium brake package. It requires the 18's to clear the caliper, different offset I was told. Also they aren't 4 spot calipers, they look like the stockies with a Ford logo on them.

I took an XR6T manual for a test drive on Wednesday and spoke to the sales guy at length about the car, and he said the premium brake package will be like a Tickford car they also had in the showroom. They looked like 4 spots with the grooved rotors.

The mystery deepens....

Cheers,

Paul.

BTW I can't get out of my 02 STi without dumping $10K, so they XR6T purchase is on hold for now. Damn Subaru retained values :-)
