Please help, my diff is driving me crazy, it has more play in it than a Sydney hooker. I have taken it to 2 ford dealers and both have advised that is has approx 45mm of backlash and that anything under 50 is acceptable. It also is a little noisy around the 100 mark as in whining. The car has only done 58,000ks Does anyone know a dealer that I might have some luck with getting it overhauled or replaced.

hey mate.. I had the same issue as yu and could not get the dealer to fix it as it was not over 50mm of freeplay. I then went in to complain about diff whine... well what do yo know.. they replace the diff for diff whine but not for the clunk that your talking about.. so what im trying to say is complain about diff whine and how its making you mad :gooff:

Remind me to never seek pleasure in Sydney :gooff: Back to your diff, the trouble with most dealers is that they have guide lines to work to...for instance in a ute the backlash (true pinion to crownwheel backlash)from the factory can be from around .006'' to .012''and you will not get a lot of pinion flange movement but in a sedan where you have movement generated through the inner and outer CV's the movement at the pinion flange will be much greater in some cases and still be within the allowable tolerances.

Movement in the driveline as a whole can be a combination of a loose clutch hub right through to CV joint wear and only qualified driveline experts can tell the differance.

...so Ford would be the last place to take your car then... :tease:

Is a pump required or is the pressure generated via the gearbox suffice..

We will be using a pump sourced out of the USA by the looks of it, we just don't want to use a sub- standard pump and have issues down the track. We want to use the factory auto transmission cooler so factory brackets and lines will be used as well. Mal

Here is another one that we come across often, have you ever noticed the drone and vibe that you get with the XR 8 and the XR6T at around 90 to 100 kph? We have found that the centre bearing is positioned to high and if you get the car or ute on a hoist and have a close look at the height of the centre bearing and then take a look at the BCD coupling (rubber drive coupling) you will see that the rubber is stressed. By spacing the centre bearing down (normally by about 6 to 8 mm) the stress is relieved on the coupling and NO more vibe. Mal

I might have to try this to see if it stops my diff whine.

It's a pretty easy and cheap fix if it works.

Thanks Mal. :spoton:
