Helpful thread this, thanks.

I'm currently using Castrol Transmax Z and find there's no noticeable noise at all. Car's done just over 20,000kms and the Z's been in since 11,000kms.

The only concern I had is that it appears that only 3.5 litres was put in (supplied 4+1L, still got 1.5L left in the big pack). I think the place I used, put it in through the old fill port perhaps?? That said, I have no noise issues whatsover. Before the Z went in, that rollover noise was very noticeable at idle, as Mal said.

As for issues etc, I think the rear end bushes are going (again) as I get a bit of clunk like before when changing gears (and not blipping the throttle to match revs). I'm thinking urethane/nolathane to replace the rubber etc when I upgrade the shock and maybe springs.

Changing gears is fine, though going 3-2 around a corner can be a bit tricky if revs aren't matched. I'm very seriously considering a Mal Wood shifter too.

The only question I read somewhere that there's reduced throw, but that there's a bit of extra effort required as you're essentially doing the same work with less physical movement. Is that right? I find the stock shifter a bit cumbersome at times. Also, does the trans need to be dropped to fit a new shifter?

Firstly fill the transmission through the reverse light switch which is located on the drivers side, it will take 4 litres through this spot which is adequate but Ford put around 4.5litres in to mask gear hash and rollover noise.

Most lubricants are thicker when very cold, try warming up your car for a few minutes before driving off. It gets damn cold here, down as low as -5 so I know what you are talking about.

The clunking in the diff area could be the inner LH CV get that checked and also the Dana Diffs have mostly been set up with too much backlash, when I fitted the 3.73 gears to my diff we closed up the backlash and now it is fine.

A short throw shifter will always require more effort but our short throw will give precise shifts withs only a slight increase in effort. We have had nothing but praise for our shifters and they are very well priced and yes you do have to lower the transmission to fit the short throw. Mal

Ok I have 2 questions...

1

I read somewhere else on here of a few guys having problems with changes in the T56 AFTER changing to Transmax Z....

I find the T56 in my F6 dificult to change gears in the morning, particularly when the temp has been below zero overninght.

I was going to use Transmax Z until I read of the dramas other were having, I have since bought some Redline ATF, but have not put it in yet. I can use the redline in my other car so what do you recomend?

2

The shift quality on my F6 was crap when it was new, then with the replacement lutch it was brilliant. After a while it got worse, then they bled the clucth when they had to replace all my pedals (check engine light). After that it was great again.

It has slowly been getting worse especially when changing into 5th.

I notice that the fluid in the clutch master is very dark brown. I remember folk complaining of 'clutch mud' in the 5 speeds. Something to do with the heat from the turbo turning the hydraulic fluid to crap...

Is this also an issue with the T56? :pinch:

There could be a better lubricant than the Castrol Transmax Z product but we haven't seen it, we have seen countless transmissions come through the workshop with all sorts of oil in them and every one of them has glazed syncro lands on the gears all except for transmissions with Dextron 3 or Transmax in them. Castrol Transmax Z is a good lubricant for these transmissions and we will continue to use it.

The problem with shift quality could well be the condition of the clutch fluid, once the fluid has been hot it is useless. That is why we designed our braided fluid line and braided remote bleed line, the braided fluid line replaces the original pipe and hose and reroutes the line direct from the transmission on the LH side across the back of the engine bay and clips on to the fitting at the firewall. The fluid now is not subjected to anywhere near as much heat and stays clear. The braided remote bleed is fitted when the braided line is fitted and brings the bleed nipple down the LH side of the transmission and allows easy bleeding of the hydraulics without clutch fluid dribbling through the bellhousing. Mal,

Have you heard of many T56's breaking and if so what was the prevailing factors?

I have only seen one Tremec T56 break a gear and that was the T56 in Robbie Bolgers Drift ute, we supply the transmission for his ute( yes I know it is a Holden) and we support him through sponsorship. This ute has 1022 rwhp and he often has other people drive it when he drift races the Monaro and I don't think the other drivers are as kind to the transmission as Robbie is.

We have a lot of Tremec T56 transmissions in cars with well over 800 fwhp and nevar had a breakage

hi mal

I want to ask about shift kits for the t56

can I change the shift pattern from h to up and down like sequential style

Ben and I are going to have a look at a sequential shifter for the T56 but it will be expensive to design and manufacture, the normal H pattern is not quite as fast but just as effective. The sequential shifter development will depend on demand. Mal

Mal,

I was thinking of adding a cooling system setup for the T56 using the existing drain and fill points.. just by using a electric pump and oil cooler with braided line attached...

Is a pump required or is the pressure generated via the gearbox suffice..

Is it benifical???

Do you make a kit???

from what I Know oil starts to break down at extreme temps, so im thinking by keeping it more stable it should prolong the life of the oil and the gearbox..

Great thread Mal...

Ben has used a cooler system on his T56 with fantastic results, we are currently working on a cost effective transmission cooler for the T56, it is not far away. Mal

Cheers Mal, your help is really appreciated :spoton:

Shopping list now includes shifter, braided trans lines and a cooler when produced. Awwww yeah :nyyaah:
