NOT ON THE ROOF)Nope, that is not true either. There is no legislation in any state of Australia that requires driving lights to be mounted above the bumper. Nor do any refer to the driver's headline. They do however place a maximum height which in most cases is 1.2m from memory. They do also stipulate roof mounting of any forward facing lights is illegal as you say, except for emergency services vehicles. I beg to differ as I know the RTA have refused Blue slips before to vehicles with driving lights mounted below the Bumper bar and above the Driver's eye line...Did you know its also illegal to have more than 6 clear lights on the front of a car...? Road Transport (Safety and Traffic Management) (Road Rules) Regulation 1999 - Sect 55 states a person must not cause or permit: any fog light affixed to a motor vehicle on a road to be lighted except in fog, mist or under other atmospheric conditions that restrict visibility. (Slymeat must have been referring to NSW)ACT - Illegal only if they "dazzle" another road user. Aust Road Rules 219 states a driver must not use, or allow to be used, any light fitted to or in the driver’s vehicle to dazzle, or in a way that is likely to dazzle, another road user. Can anyone quote other state legislation to clear this up for good? SA has no legislation referring to fog lights, so the Australian Road Rules apply here.

Well the RTA are acting in contravention of not only the ADRs but also the NSW legislation regarding driving lights. If they tried to impose that on me they would find themselves defending their action in court.Again, it is not illegal to have more than 6 clear lights on the front of the car. Maybe you mean auxilliary lights? There is a section of the ADRs that stipulates that up to four driving lights may be fitted. And another section which allows for up to two fog lights, which may be either clear or yellow/amber.And while we're playing "did you know" - did you know that any auxilliary lights must be placed in pairs? Yes, that means you cannot have one or three driving lights or a single fog light (on the front).PS Next time the RTA try to impose those restrictions ask them to show you the legislation. Oh, and one last point - the RTA don't have the responsibility of issuing or refusing blue slips so I think you may be confused on several counts. I do it, I have been told by a cop to turn them off, but only once, didn't use them for bout 8 months as a light was out and couldn't be assed changing it. but I use them now!legal or not?
