Hi all, Ive just recently purchased an 03 xr6t as of about 3 weeks ago,

I got an edit with just the generic tunes on it last night and after a quick takeoff the car misfired and I could hear a fairly loud ticking noise.

Looked at it this morning and it sounds like its coming from near the gearbox. its a 5 spd btw.. its got me worried. The ticking gets quicker when I accelearate as well..

anyone have any ideas what this problem is?

Thanks!

It sounds like it's pinging mate. Load your standard map back in and DO NOT run the generic tune until you have had the car looked at. A shattered piston and a hole in the side of your block wont be far off other wise.

Any engine misfire is extremely back and has known to cause conrod failure. It may be that the conrod has bent and is just touching the bottom of the cylinder bore as it rotates past bottom dead centra. If this is the case get it looked at and dont drive it until you do as if this is the problem it will cost lots more money if it breaks as they normally put a hole in the block and can even break the crankshaft.

Mine also ticks but only when the generic tune is in I think it is actually a solinoid or a spring somewhere in the wastegate, a dyno should fix it. You'll find you hear it more from inside the car than out and that it's a constant speed all the time, just a bit annoying.

I dont think its a tune thing.. IVe put the default tune on and it still does it.. its definately mechanical.. It sounds like when someone has a card on the spokes of there pushbike and gets faster when u accelerate..

Still waiting to get it back to the dealer..

are there any other symptoms of a bent rod? the clicking noise sounds alot louder say underneath the drivers side of the car than it does in the engine bay.. does that sound right ?

Whats involved in replacing a bent conrod? costs and whatnot?

Cheers!

Whats involved?? Its definately a big job that's for sure!!!

Im currently repairing my sisters celica, which has a blown gasket, imagine urs :spoton:

Ull have to take out your rocket cover for starters, then going through the pain of dismantling the cylinder head, ALLINGING the camshaft pulley timing belt to TDC, valves, valvesprings, rockers, pistons, piston rings, and connecting rods just to name a few.

If your gonna rectify it urself, id reccomend u to measure the clyinder bores, with a bore gauge and also a telescopic gauge, to make sure your bores arent out of shape.

Also make sure to check the crankshaft and the journals for wear or warpage.

San.

Why is everyone jumping to conclusions and scaring the crap out of this newbie.....

saying it's a bent rod.

If he has recently purchased it, I'm sure there would be some support from the dealer, and until he gets some feedback from them, I wouldn't speculate.

Mate. Once dealer has looked at it, let us know what they said.

Ticking could be any number of things....

Has the vehicle got any factory warranty left?

Where are you based? What state?

Be careful with the generic tunes as I know of engines that have missfired under full load and then a ticking noise started from the motor.

Even though the ticking sounds harmless there is a chance it could be a bent rod as this has happened on a few xr6ts with generic edit.

If you have been giving the car big hits and its been pinging then it could be the rod, sometimes the pinging is loud, but even if its not heard you can still be causing damage due to hot spots being created in the chamber.

The xr6t can handle quite alot of pinging before the rod actualy bends (even though the rods are a weak point).
