Posted 04/08/06 05:08 AM Share Posted 04/08/06 05:08 AM (edited) Thanx a million Jack , I think I can live with the mild crunching until I get the T56.Plus it sounds better having a 6 speed cogswapper. So the clutches and flywheel are bigger or sumthn in the T56 equiped XR's?No problem mate...The T56 is a far superior box than the T5, it makes the car feel a million times stronger, you will get a real sense of confidence from it... I believe the factory clutch will still mate up with the T56 but it's hardly worth doing a box swap and leaving the crappy stock clutch in there... if you plan on modifying the car then an upgraded clutch should on your list of things to do anyway...For the record I have a Mal Wood Option 3 single plate organic clutch, alloy concentric slave cylinder and matching 8kg flywheel combo in my car and it is absolutely brilliant (you'd be looking at around $1700 or so from memory)... hangs on beautifully and has far better pedal feel than the standard clutch and is also no heavier on the foot than the stock clutch either. There are a few guys on here who use one of these clutches, XLNT6 being one of them and his car is now producing inexcess of 400rwkw, so strength won't be an issue!!Good luck with it...Jack Edited 04/08/06 05:13 AM by XR6T8_U

I will 99.9% be sure as hell in swapping to the T56 and the OPTION 3 kit. Its just a matter of saving up my money. Also isnt Mal Wood Auto up in Qld, if that's the case I'm a long drive to his workshop, if I swap the box to the 6 speed ,what will I do with the T5? Posted 04/08/06 05:54 AM Share Posted 04/08/06 05:54 AM You don't have to have them fit it, they can also just supply the box and clutch and you can have someone local fit it for you... any competent mechanic should be able to do a gearbox swap and fit a clutch for you...I'm from Melbourne and they sent the clutch and stuff with a courier to Nizpro down here in Melbourne who fitted the box and clutch for me...And what to do with the T5... you can use it as a paper weight... or I sold mine with all the bits and pieces I didn't use in the conversion for $550.00, not much but it's better than nothing... and Mal Wood also do trade-in's if you buy the box and stuff off them, depending obviously on the condition of the box they are taking out...Jack

It would be much cheaper to short out the shift issues. If you plan to mod then the six speed makes senses as it is stronger. Just a question.Scotty

So from the responses I've received which have been so helpful I beleive fixin the T5 will be not a total waste of money but pretty pointless if I have plans in the future to mod my BA XR6t.Better now than later and spend more money than necessary. And for the reason of using 5th not often is that it crunches into it so I avoid using it. Maybe that's why I'm gettn bad fuel economy. And I dont give my XR much at all. I lost my license for 5 years and I've had it back for 1 year and a bit and plan to keep it.But I do understand your point Growing old is inevitableGrowing up is optional

So my T5 hopefully will last until I get my T56 with the Mal Wood Auto OPTION 3 kit.Bloody cant wait.

You've done the right thing about seeing the people you bought your car from, how far out of factory warranty is it? Or does it still have a tiny bit left?Another thing to remember is that the T5 equipped cars have a 3.46 final drive ratio in the diff, whereas the the T56 (BA Mk2) have 3.73's so by fitting a T56 to your car you will lengthen the effective gearing in your car, along with 1st and 2nd gear being about 12% taller than the same ratio's in the T5...Just something else to think about...Jack

(havent looked how the driveshafts are held in)I just might take it to my mechanic who is really good, doesnt have young f@#$ wit apprentices there, I'll get him to sort it out. And my handbrake still doesnt work right, the fkrs didnt fix it they just tightened up the biatch. So I'm still stuffed, cant park up hills nose up, only reverse ways.Another thing my mechanic will replace, the whole bloody cable. And pads while his at it...phew what a mouthful
