Quick question, I dont use 5th gear much in my 2003 BA XR6t but when I do, on the way to work doin bout 80 or so it crunches into 5th but only once if I take it out of 5th then put it back in its ok.

Is it a common thing for the cogbox to crunch into 5th? I was told it was but that sounds a bit wrong for it to do so. Any help will be great.

It is a VERY common problem in the BA Mk1's.

The problem is replicating the problem for the dealer. They will need to rebuild the box to fix it.

doh, thanx dude, so I guess it would be better to save up the dollars and get a 6 speed (are they called a T56 by the way?).

I had exactly the same problem with my car before I put in the T56 and it was rectified under warranty.

Does it feel a little vague when you are selecting gears? Mine did... and would crunch in to 5th, not all the time but when it would do it, it is was at 'highway' speeds... 80kph +

Here is what the invoice says that I got back from Ford...

Work Description

Check Gearbox, gears hard to select

Work carried out

Carry out diagnostic test on shift quality, remove gearbox, replace selector block and re-test ok.

Ford said there was no need to rebuild the gearbox, it is a problem with the selector and the part desription is 'Lever Assy Offset'. Part no. F*EL-7F018-A

Hope that helps...

Edit-And what they did rectified the problem and sured up the shift and improved shift quality heaps...

My T used to have this problem.

2 gearboxes later it was fixed.

If they can now do this with the replacement of a single part then fantastic, as it took me over 12 months of being stuffed around by FoMoCo to get the issue resolved.

Yeah, it would only crunch say at highway speeds, but the rest of the gears are ok, 3rd is a biatch its not inline, hmm like 3rd and 4th are directly inline so it makes down changing a fight sometimes. I've only had the car for 2 1/2 weeks so I'm still getting acustomed to the new ride.

Thnx for the part number coz I might get my mech to fix it while he puts in the new clutch. As for a 6 speeder, what are they called and rough price on them, just for curiousity sake, and if I do go with it, since I'm from the liverpool area somewhere from Sydney would be the go to get the cogswapper

Had the same problem with my car. Crunching into 5th doing over a certain amount of revs but only doing it if shifting quickly from 4th to 5th a slow shift had no dramas.

Next service they replaced the syncros and have never had a drama with it since.

Oh, also forgot to mention, that I brought the car from Australian Fleet Sales.

So I dont know if this problem will go under warranty, coz it sounds like a Mk1 Ford thing. If that's the case, how much is that replacement part and would it be worth the hassle or just get the 6 speed, and do they bolt straight up, same clutch, sensor conectings, tailshaft gearbox crossmember the whole shebang?

Any mods required to fit it up?

It sounds as if you have exactly the same problem as what I had... I have since upgraded to a T56 OEM 6 speed, I was able to source a near new T56 for 3k, brand new from Ford they are around 5.5k-6k, but as the 6 speed has been out for a little while now you might be able to find one a little cheaper at the wreckers from a smashed car... budget around 8k if you want the swap as you may as well upgrade the clutch/flywheel at the same time. You will also need a T56 x-member and tailshaft yoke, these will set you back about $300.00 from memory.

In Sydney not sure who to see, but have a look at a site sponsor here 'Mal Wood Automotive' they do 6 speed upgrades and also do trade-in's on your existing T5...

Thanx a million Jack :stirthepot: , I think I can live with the mild crunching until I get the T56.

Plus it sounds better having a 6 speed cogswapper.

So the clutches and flywheel are bigger or sumthn in the T56 equiped XR's?
