Ems Vs Edit

As one of the few people to actually have used the EMS on a BA turbo, I would like to add my experiences using it.

Pro's

Does it make good power? most certainly yes. I'm yet to see many if any other tuned cars make 300rwkw using only 10psi of boost. Most people that show their dyno sheets making this power level are usually running 12-13 psi or higher. I have been in several edit tuned cars making same power and they seem sluggish in comparison.

Fuel consumption for an engine producing this kind of power was fantastic. 780 km per tank of actual highway cruising. I was achieving the same fuel economy running more boost and larger injectors as I do now driving the car in stock trim.

Open road cruising the engine ran beautifully. Throttle response was instant.

I like the fact that can hook up a laptop and a wideband O2 sensor head out to the road data log it and make small changes to the tune yourself if you wish.

No need to worry yourself with torque tags the system basically bypasses it and your engine is producing it's full potential.

Cons

Transmittions definately need upgrading to accomodate the high torque levels

Cold starts were the only real issue that I can say the system had. This can be solved simply though with some more time spent on the calabration tables and using the EMS to run the fuel pump.

Summary

I will fit the system back on again one day, but for now I'm going to use it on another project I'm working on.

Were you using 02 feedback control with the EMS?

Were you using 02 feedback control with the EMS?

not at that time nor was he running the latest version it was the latest hardware but not firmware!!!!

you guys keep missing the boat the edit is better in most cases but the best world scenario is ems edit combo for anything with heaps of mods or for example tune only record at the drags etc.

This is a classic case of "I feel dumber for reading this thread" :spoton:

However there is quite a simple solution :fool:

Use what you can understand to get the job done.

Sure there are plenty of switched on tuners out there that have the education to understand basic quadratics, and wrap their head around the sums that make the factory system work. They are the guys that turn out the impressive cars that hold the records, and turn out road cars that get tuned once...and then driven for the remainder of their lives :blush:

However, not everyone has had the necessary schooling to get to grips with a lot of whats on offer inside factory management systems, and that's no slight on anyone. This stuff is designed by engineers for calibrators, both of which spend many years studying at tertiary level. In other words its not easy....but no one ever said it was.

If a tuner needs to use a 'dot to dot' approach - to break the process down to an understandable level - when mapping a car with an aftermarket system then good for them. This is course is not the optimum way to run an engine, never has been, and never will be, which is why manufacturers dont do it. However it is perfect for a 'quick and simple' tune, and gifts those that otherwise would be incapable of tuning modern cars, the ability to have something to sell :busted1:

I dont have an answer to the original question though. The only time I ever saw an XR6T with an aftermarket management system on it, the poor thing needed a second battery conversion it took so long to start...which sort of left me thinking "Why spend $40K - $50K on a car and turn it into an old xD?"
