Are you able to remove the fuel pump fuse and crank the car till the fuel pressure is gone on these cars.? Gotta be better than an eyeball full of fuel....

You can remove the fuel relay in the fuse box in the engine bay quite easily, and I can't see why you couldnt start the engine and run it until fuel pressure was gone, this should only take a few seconds, and then there would be less fuel spilling.

I know its a bit of a thread mine... BUT I cannot for the life of me undo the two hoses going in/out of the fuel filter!!!

Ive put a spanner on the filter and the smaller one on the fuel line and turn in the right directions and it wont budge at all !! I put some WD40 on there so hopefully its worked its magic a bit overnight and softened things up a little bit. VERY ANNOYING as I want to see how clogged up the filter is, and put on the new one :(

Any tips? (yes I did eat my weetbix this morning :)

This is actually quite common...

The nuts on the fuel filters can be impossible to undo sometimes. Try 2 flare nut spanners that are good quality.

I actually know of cases where the line had to cut and hose and clamps put in place.
