not too keen on having my car roll backwards down hills anymore!!!
The first three or so times that I took my car back to my dealer with this (rolling backwards) problem I got the response "oh, we haven't heard of that problem before". Mind you, that was 3 years ago but what a crock!!

If this fixes the rolling problem then I'd do it but if it's just gonna get rid of the ssh ssh and it's likely to come back then I won't bother. After having Ford "fix" the problem each time it was serviced (plus extra times) and one time actually charging me for removal of the rears and adjusting the pads, I still had the problem less than two weeks later.

One thing I've noticed is that this problem starts to occur again after a long trip - has anyone else noticed that? I was furious when I went to Tassie less than a WEEK after having this problem "fixed" (took Spirit III from Sydney - Devonport) only to get to Hobart and find the handbrake was stuffed again!

I got the sh*ts in the end and took it to my own mechanic who removed the rears and fixed it properly. What's worse is that he told me the rears had not once been removed before as the discs were against the stops or something - he assured me they had not once been adjusted and all that Ford had done was adjust the cable.

poida97,

It was not the dealership that did it for nothing, Ford C.R.C. (Customer Relations Centre) picked up the bill from the dealer.

You should ring them and see what they can do for you. Try and be adamant that you should not pay for it!

P.S. Peter Warren - Warwick Farm where it was fixed.

WELL, I got my handbrake fixed yesterday but I still got charged 200 bucks. NOT impressed, considering I could have bought the parts for 80 bucks and done the job myself.

The Ford "customer service centre" was not much help either.

As much as I would love to name the dealership that I took it to right here, I don't think that is allowed. Having said that, PM me and I'll let you know who to avoid.

They have lost a customer.

do ba handbrakes use the rear brakes? because I noticed some cog looking thing on the rears which my friend says is our handbrake

If it is the cog looking thing on the rear shaft, it is the Tone Wheel that the sensor for the ABS and traction control uses to gauge wheel speed. Have a look at the attached page.

The handbrake on these is the traditional piece of crap that dates back to the other Model T! It is a cable operated twin shoe brake that operates in a drum on the inner part of the rear disc.

I think you need to get a smarter friend

Guys,

My handbrake failed the other day - pulled it all the way up when the car was in the driveway and the car started to roll backwards..not good.

Anyway, rang dealer and took it in the following day. Guy tried to tell me that its probably an adjustment, and if so is not covered under warranty. Having read about the handbrake issues on this and other forums and about the TSB that Ford have released (finally) for it, I gave the guy a few choice words about what I knew and that I would not be paying for the fix. He said they would examine and let me know what they do.

Sure enough at 10:00am I get a phone call from the Service Advisor saying that it was nothing but an adjustment and it will be $55.00, thankyou. For me it wasn't the money, but the principle of the thing that is the issue.

Well, I told him that wasn't acceptable and that I would not be paying for this given the car is still under factory warranty, and that I have only done 17,000 k's since brand new from THEIR dealership - and if they want me to buy another car from them they better get their act together.

To cut a long story short, they ended up putting the TSB through it and kept the car overnight because they needed to order a new spring for the handbrake and Ford accepted the whole thing under warranty - as they should!!

Bottom line, thanks to the forum for all the info about the handbrake issue. Definitely the old adage of "fore-warned is fore-armed" rings true. When they know that you know what you are talking about, they can't bullsh*t you as easy.

Another quick note for the ute owners out there....

This TSB covers Sedans ONLY apparently because of the difference in the rear suspension between sedans and utes.....

To be honest I don't know how that affects the Park brake making noise but hey..... That's what I was informed today by Ford.....
