don't know if this is a common problem or just a one off.

the missus came home complaining of a noise in the rear end of the xr6t. after removing the rear wheels and looking and doin a lot of head scratchin I noticed the handbrake cable draped over the driveshaft boot. seems it dislodged itself from it's locating tab on the crossmember just above and in front of the diff on the drivers side, allowing the cable to drop onto the cv boot. being a sort of convoluted metal cable I think I was very lucky that it did'nt tear the crap out of the boot, it did however pull the boot off flinging grease everywhere. the solution was to put it back into it's locating tab and cable tie the open end of the tab so it can't fallout again. I suggest that anyone with a car that is out of warranty to spend 5 minutes under the car on this preventive maintainence coz I sure as hell would have been pissed off if I had to pull the drive shaft out to replace a ripped dust boot. 5 cents worth of cable tie might save you plenty of heartache.

I noticed the other week my handbrake was light to pull up and it wasnt holding on steep hills. I stuck my head under the rear for a look and noticed that the left side had disloged itself from its hook. Put it back on, had a few test pulls of the handbrake and it fell off again. It had to be put on a certain way so the slack in the cable wouldnt work its way loose while driving ect. Its been fine since, but it wasnt causing any damage like urs docoom. Hope it stay put now :)
