Great info and it is a little light on (available info) when you get this far into mods - which is completely understandable as not many people have ventured here yet.

That manifold that is pictured, that isn't one for our car is it?? Because, a nice manifold like that and the turbo upgrade would probably see me through for one. At a stretch, 440rwkw's on pump fuel and maybe 450 with some Sunoco would do.

Robin, did you fit your turbo and drive it for a while without re-tuning? If so, what was it like? Keeping in mind I have a 4 inch dump and a 4 inch single system through my car so there is very little in the way of backpressure.

I remember Simon from Nizpro mentioning something about spinning the wheels in 4th at 200kph... on a dry road :spit:

Might a be a bit of a handful to drive in the wet...

Don't know what I can add....

The exhaust manifolds Simon is making at the moment have been re-jiggeg to maintain the existing turbo compressor location, so they are completely compatable with the stage 2 cobra kit.

These are a generally to suit a split pulse turbo, with external waste gate and have a different flange location as well, so the manifold pictured is not the current version for the BA from Nizpro.

The brand/manufacturer does manufacture manifolds for the BA, and it is available.

As mentioned, external wastegates are preferable, and CAN be optioned with the pictured manifold. It would be then just a matter of welding shut the factory flapper.

oh, and with good fuel, cars will pick up considerably more than 10rwkw if it's tuned to the fuel.

Great discussion uys it's really interesting to read about matching up flow characteristics and spool up etc etc.

What about e throw in some thoughts about the latest turbo technology - I have been reading a lot about Garrett developing, manuacturing and now really starting to sell variablle nozzle turbochargers - the "nirvana" of turbos. I read that they are OEM fitted to the latest 911 turbos.

Basically they use a series of adjustable fins and discs to create an almost infinitely variable set of spool and flow characteristics for the turbo. So in essence you ould fit a TO4 type turbo that could flow say 500-600RWKW but it would behave like our stock turbo in the lower RPM ranges while spooling up. As far as I can remember from the article, all the control is internal by means of pressure sensing so fitment does not require additional ECU's or suchlike....

I'm guessing (and this is just lounge room opinion) that you could fit a set of extractors that are tuned more towards the higher flow characteristics of such a turbo's top end but still retain great drieveability in the lower/mid RPM's ecause of the variable vanes. An additional benefit isthat most of these turbos do not require a wastegate. So engine bay fitment becomes far simpler....

Come on Simon/Brian - let's see you fit one of these puppies up and show us some hi tech tuning. I bet the results would be awesome...

Robin, with all this work including repairs etc, I would imagine this is reasonably good value?

Or, if you are going to spend this money, would we be better off unloading a little more and buying a whole new turbo with a bigger exhaust turbine and external 'gate??

If one was to go with the GCG upgrade, would that require a retune to cope, or would the base tune be OK even though it would most likely be sub-optimal.

Brian/Robin/ Others, could you maybe detail usable rpm ranges for the power levels and 'stages' you describe. Rpm at which fullboost is obtained, and the rpm at which this is sustained to, torque levels etc especially with the different turbos??

Depending on your ultimate goal. Is 10% more than what you've got enough ? If not then your better off going the whole shooting match. Ofcourse cost is going to considerably more than the GCG type upgrade. BTW Rotormaster in Melbourne offers the same upgrade for less than GCG, but it is based on good core turbo, ie not new centre bearing. My other post as detailed above gives you an idea on what I paid.
