Low Viscosity Oil - Should I Be Worried?

Last week I took my car to my regular Ford dealer for an oil & oil filter change ( I do this every 5,000km). When I questioned the bill ($210 - heaps more than I've paid before) they said that since the car's done 30,000km, they used a Castrol fully synthetic oil, 5 - 40/50? and that it was better than the semi-synthetic oil they've used previously (15-40 Castrol). I was a bit concerned because they wouldn't have told me if I didn't question the bill. I told them that the Ford manual states that 15-40 is recommended but the service guy said no, I should be using the fully synthetic one. I said okay, I don't want to tell you how to do your job and he then charged me $148 (which would have been the cost for the 15-40 oil) so I thought that was okay and I left. However, the more I think about it, the more I'm worrying.

Do you think the oil is too thin?

Should I take the car back and ask to get the oil changed back to what they were always using? Any thoughts?

dont know about the oil but they are stinging you for a change, on the 3000km service they charged me for parts alone with oil and filter change and it cost 60 dollars in parts, where the hell do they get off charging 90 dollars for labour, most mechanical workshops charge 90 an hour, so they are saying it takes 1 hour to change the oil. Which dealership is this, I want a job if that's how long it takes to do that work

Some members will tell you it's to thin, I'm running 0W40 as are several others on the forums without any problems. 0W40 is the same viscosity when hot as 15W40 so I don't really see how it could give you less protection and it flows quicker through the engine when cold on start up. That's my therory anyway. Castrol edge 0W40 is approved for use by FPV so I doubt they would recomend an oil that could cause you problems.

0W-40 is approved for use in the Boss engines. I'm not saying it's no good for the XR6T though...

Engine oils still confuse the hell out of me.

For what it's worth I'm using Castrol Edge 10W-60. Before this my dealer was putting in Castrol FMX which is a semi-synthetic 15W-40.

Last time I change my oil I sent castrol an e-mail asking which fully synthetic oil was most suited to the T as on their website it only had a recomendation for a mineral oil and they said the 0W40.
