I worked there for 7 years from 1985 to 1992 I had a ball. There used to be a great social life after dark with constant Expat organised parties at the various walled compounds. Yes there were the muggings and attacks and things happening never happened to me and I spent a lot of time out at night. It probably helped that I am 6ft 4 and weigh many kilos and my mates there were all of similar proportions. Weekends were spent fishing and scuba diving with some of the best diving sites in the world, the great barrier reef has nothing on this place.

I used to go away with a few of my "local" work mates stay in villages and treated like a king.

I went back there 4 years ago for a week and the place had really deteriorated. It seems most expats now carry guns, we used to carry baseball bats and swords, so the stakes are now higher. I would not go there with family anymore as it would be dangerous for a white woman in that place but if the money was right I might consider going back as im now single again, it would have to be a lot though.

Standard conditions for Expat employment in our company was free housing, car, telephone up to K100 per month, power and a free flight home every 12 months. At the end of your 3 year contract you were paid a lump sum gratuity of 25% of your gross earning taxed at 2 %. Other companies offered similar packages. Gratuities have now been squashed by the local government.

One of the reasons the larger companies have pulled out of this area is the difficulty they have in getting their money out of the country. The government expect the companies to be reinvesting their profits back into the country and have some tough restrictions in exporting of earnings off shore.

If you want to know more PM me.

hey Chook,

mate of mine ran over a black fella during an ambush on a road and he went straight to the cop station, found a white cop and they put him on the first plane back to Aust... :spoton: ..unless they a paying you 150k a year or value you life dont even think about. Other places are ok if you have your own compound. Another mate travels to Lihir island all the time for business and they luv him there. He just doesnt like Moresby. If your are black you wont have an issue champ. :spoton:

All will be OK if you know how to use a gun and willing to use it

A mate has had to a few times to save his life,

he no longer lives in PNG as he was told to leave.

Still know others that still live there 6mths a year

$150,000 is not enough!!! Actually if you are Black and from the wrong tribe or location you are probably worse off than if you are white. The wantok system and payback ie an eye for an eye a life for a life is the rule of the land up there. Tribal fights are common and every death from one side must be revenged with a death from the other and so the cycle goes on. Outside of Port Moresby it is a great place with many interesting places to visit.

Number one rule is if you are involved in an accident do not stop make your way to the nearest police station or go home and report it the next day.

One thing, one on one they are sh*t scared of a big white guy get them in a group and they gain some extra courage, sounds like Western Sydney hahhaha.

Port Moresby I think, haven't really spoken to him, he's only been back once, but from what I've heard security is ok where you live but outside of that its pretty dangerous.
