Workplace Bargaining Agreements

If you're out of work, go do some study at tafe.

My old man was a fully qualified mechanic in Croatia, however it means absolutely nothing in Australia.

He went on to do his dogmans ticket, and started earning more than he ever could being a mechanic back in the 70's.

Recently he's been out of work, so he went through tafe to get his riggers ticket, scaffolding, crane driver, forklift driver, hoist driver, etc...

He is now earning twice as much money as me (and I do well for a 25 year old) for standing in the same spot, hooking a load up to a crane, and telling the driver where to put it.

Far out, he even got $40 an hour for operating a large hoist (think elevator).

Even starting out as a cleaner in a construction firm will get you $20 an hour.

Not for long if the current trend continues in this industry. New people being employed under AWA's and like most of us wanting a job willing to work hard, will be offered a lot less than this.

As you all keep saying good employees who work hard, have safe practice and qualifications are good value to the job.

Your dad and the rest of us who work in this industry are being asked to do the same job for less money - no overtime after working 8 hours but expected to continue to work 10 every day etc. And of course people will have to do it to survive.

this is the reality - not whinging just stating it.

My post was directed at the lazy dole bludgers out there who couldn't be stuffed doing a bit of hard work, whinging about the fact they can't find any work even when there is plenty of work around (even in the country).

Who the fk cares if they got qualifications and only want to work in the chosen field?

Get a job anywhere whilst you keep looking for that perfect opportunity.

I am currently studying to be a teacher and must say that theses new changes are very scary.

Its good to see that this country is going straight to hell, we cant beat China and other low pay countries so why dont we join em.

There is no honor, respect or mutual understanding for other members of the public, and I guess its a pipe dream to think that everyones various contributions are equal.

Sure theses IR laws will make Australia more competitive and attractive, companies who were here before and couldnt exploit workers here so went overseas will return once workers here are paid just as crap as in China and the like.

I really look forward to the day when we will be treated a little less than garbage, working an extra 20 hours a week for no extra pay so we can look "useful" to our employers, in the faint hope that they wont hire someone else who will do an extra 25 hours without extra pay and so it will go.

Its so shameful that some people would even remotely think these changes are good, we have set in motion a widening of the gap between richer and poorer our way of life in Australia is under attack, work Sat and Sundays, public holidays in cases for little or no extra pay, the happiness of the family unit will suffer terribly, it will no longer be a case of working hard to make life better but working hard just to stay employed.

I do not look forward to the next couple of years...

I wish it wasnt the case but its already starting ... sad but true.

I am working casual at the moment while I study, I get paid for the hours I have on the roster but not the 2 or more hours I do after close to get ready for the next day, resumes come in every day so we cant say nothing about it or we can be replaced just as easily, and this isnt a job I care much about in terms of longevity, let alone if I was full time and had to support a family...

What makes you think that those in power both employers or government are going to have any compasion for others but their bottom line...

Can the company afford to pay us the extra hour or 2 that we are there after work, sure they can, a multinational like that can, but it looks so much better on their shareholders if they dont...

I know screw the Australian worker and drive around in expensive cars and live in posh houses while your employees are struggling to make ends meet.

Yeah maybe they should become there own boss you say but they still need someone to work under them and the problem of them becoming selfish only intrested in themselves type of people then becomes a possibility.

Not all bosses are like this of course just as not all employees are druggies and bludgers.

Not all people fall under that category. IR has just given more powers to the employers and that's the only reason business like it end of story.
