I get a similar thud from the back when going over speed bumps and uneaven road etc. Mine sounds like it is coming from the rear left but its hard to tell. Almost sounds like the fuel tank it lose or something and thuds!

I think it might be the spring rubber seats that are on top and bottom of rear springs. I have SSL springs in the back and from what I can see the rubbers between the springs and body of car are not in the best condition. I might replace them and see if that helps.

I was also thinking that the fuel tank is loose! It seems we have the same type of noise. Let us know if you get to the bottom of this.

Well, interesting news. Got some noise at the rear for some time now (hollow knocking sort of sound over undulations - hard to explain). Went for a test drive under warranty and they mentioned its a known issue and they're replacing the rear shockers with new ones. I've only got about 30K on the dial.

Have you guys had similar problems with the shockers?

that's the exact problem I have!!! ill have to take it in to get them done.

I have a similar problem. I have bilsteins and they were removed and tested and had no problem. Mine only seems to do it at low speed. I will investigate the bushes ...

could be upper shock bolts, just require to loosening and retension, rear sway bar drop link bushes, and the bushes tend to flog out, also rear lower front control arm has problems sometimes with the outter ball joint having excessive lateral movement, your dealer can test easily and if they have dramas, find another one.

Mine also did this and was fixed by the diff mob when I was getting my diff inspected.

You are 100% correct in saying it is coming from the rear left. What the problem is is that one of the rear diff cradle bolts (left side) sits about 2mm away from the fuel tank. When you go over bumps etc, the entire cradle moves a little bit and the head of this bolt thumps against the fuel tank. The head of this bolt is domed, so the fix is to simply grind away the some of the domed part of the bolt. You will notice that there is actually a piece of thin foam stuck to the fuel tank to cushion this bolt if it touches the fuel tank. (At least mine has the foam - June 2004 build)

Get underneath there and have a look for yourselves. Obviously you will find that this issue only affects sedans and not the utes as they do not have the diff cradle.

Thanks for that mate. I'll have a look once the car is on the hoist, bit hard to get under there with the ride height :w00t2:

Mine has less than 4,000 on the clock and it does it. I asked them to look at it during the 3,000 service. They said they tightened everything, but it's still the same.

Let me know how it goes. If it works I'll get them to replace mine.

Funny thing is, my old man's Passat is doing the same and VW refuses to do anything about it.
