Plastic stuff pretending to be something else looks cheaper than plain plastic in my opinion.If someone was to make real aluminium or wood surrounds, I reckon they would work, and would sell as well. (I would go an aluminium one). Same goes for the trims on the dash, gear knobs etc. Or tack on fake carbon fibre bits.
