Mate - to stay around the 1K or under... forget about getting a Head unit...

Get either a 5 channel amp (Reasonable one like a Pioneer, or Clarion), if not a 5 Channel, get a 4ch for the speakers and a mono or 2 channel (bridged) for the sub...

Check out a speaker like the Pioneer E Series, or splits, maybe Clarion, or the Access 1 Series from Focal... Other brands like JL, Rockford, Alpine etc might be something you might like to hear also...

The most important thing to consider is that you are in the front of the car, so focus a good amount of money on the front split speakers - (consider how you listen to music at home - 2 speakers and normally in front of you)... same for your car...

If you need some rear speakers get something as a 'fill' speaker... something which will handle ok levels of volume and sound ok... remember they are just fill speakers...

Look at a 10" sub and a box ported box... Pioneer, JL, Rockford, subs are all good, as are many others also....

Then you will need 1x 5ch amp, or 1x mono/2ch amp for the sub and a 4ch for the speakers.. Again Brands above make good mid range amps also... Pioneer, Clarion, Alpine, etc...

You will need a wiring kit and some good speaker cables - Supra from Jaycar is prob the best readly avaiable high end cable in Australia... Good price for what u get also...

with the amps, make sure they are high level input capable... this will be where you can simply cut the current speaker wires and then connect into the new amps.

then run the new cable through the car into each speaker locations...

Its also worth buying a splter for the power also, and fuses unless included in the wire kit...

and once you have it all - wire it up and anyway you go... :)

Far easier an better then running a headunit also...

Let me know if there is anything else I can help u with... :)

Thanks man,

Guess this is kinda stupid.. but I was under the impression that a headunit was just the 'face' of the cd player. (the thing with all the knob and play, plause stop buttons.. the thing that I would most likely have to put where the tissue box holder is?

For a cheap yet effective head unit.. with the speakers.. good ones in the front.. "fillers" in the back .. an effective amp with a sub.. how much am I looking around? Really.. what would be your decsion if im wanting to spend under a grand to get the most out of it?

Also, iv seen some tutorials.. but you woldnt have seen a tutorial about pulling apart the stock 02 ba deck and whats behind it.. I got the tissue box holder out... but am only able to see the power source lead.. nothing else? Hopefully you have seen one with many more pictures?

Thanks in advance.

Mate - a 'pre amp' is the part that does the tone (bass and treble) control... its where the audio/signal will run out of the decoder before the 'amp' module... it is inside 99% of head units, with and without build in amps...

It is a small part built into the PCB...

:)

Cheap effective setup, would be to get a amp (4ch) to run the speakers... a (2ch or mono block) to run the sub... Forget about a head unit save your move and run the amps from the ICC/Headunit into the high level inputs of the amps...

get a wiring kit and run the power from the battery and find a ground point in the boot...

and wire you speakers up from the amp, and the sub from the sub amp...

get urself a 10" boxed (ported) sub...

if you get all the gear from someone like JB you will just have to give your negotiation skills a work out...

find out what u want (model numbers) go home ring around and play each place of the other, untill you get what u want for the price you want...

then offer for them to do the install if you not sure what your doing...

For a complete system for about a $1,000. you could consider 6" spits for the front, something like the Pioneer E series, and run some cheaper stuff in the rear... maybe a Pioneer A series 2 way coax... JL have a 10" sub for a few hundred, and maybe Pioneer, or Clarion amps...

You could look at Alpine speakers, might be a little more $$$, Clarion speakers are in the sort of $$$ range, JL, there are heaps!

With regards to speakers, sorry but I cant tell you want to buy, as speakers are a personal thing... what sort of music you listen to and what sort of sound you like...

just make sure when you listening test the speakers, make sure they are running them 'flat' with no tone or loudness controls on... this will give you a true impression of the speaker... it ifs 'in your face, lively, loud, clean, warm, whatever...'

with amps, make sure you get amp(s) with low distortion levels (otherwise knows at THD) look for something below 0.5%... a lot of amps will give you power ratings with 1%, this is not good at all... and rather false in a way... Lower the better... also make sure the power ratings are in RMS and not PMPO or anything other rating...

Sub - look for a 10"... this will give you a 'punchy' type of sound... 12" are good also... but 15" sub are in most cases a complete waste of time, unless in the right application... just of a general upgrade dont waste your $$$...

remember frint speakers will be more important then rears... so speanding 300$ on fronts and 150$ on rears isn't a silly thing - remember u drive the car and are in the front.. who cares about the people in the back... :)

Anyways hope this helps...

Let me know if there is anything else...

Forgot to mention this again.. basically your saying not to get a new 'head unit' rather connect the amp and speakers up to the oriigina sound system that's in place now?

If so, will my steering wheel; Seek.. and volume contols still work?

One last question.. What is the difference between connecting everything up to the factory standard cd player.. and getting a new head unit in with mp3???

mightyxr8,

Mate not sure how you have wired it up, but it 'shouldnt' blow the ICC fuse if you do it correctly...

Are you wiring the speaker cables/wires from the ICC into a 'high level' input on the amp, or trying to run it into the RCA's?

Also are you sure you have connected everything up correctly, if your blowing the ICC fuse in the engine bay, there is a short somewhere, I'm guessing from the ICC to the amps...

You may be asking the ICC to work to hard by turning it up to loud also...

Check all your wiring again, and if this keeps happening, maybe you need to get it checked my a store... it could be a number of things...

Also, are you running the speaker wires from the ICC -> Amp -> replacement speakers running new wiring from the Amp to the new speakers?

How have you run the power to the Amps?

RJE91,

Yeah basically, skip the idea of a new headunit....

waste of money if you are looking for a $1,000 upgrade...

The headunit will cost you at least half of that for a good model and leave you next to nothing for the rest of the install...

As for the ability to use the steering wheel controls to the ICC, Yes by installing a new Amp(s), speaker and sub, this will mean you keep the ICC as your 'source' device, therefore not effecting the remote/steering wheel controls...

Win win situation!

:spoton:

If you not sure on the install, might be best to pay a installer 60$ or whatever the rate is now days to wire it up for you!

"Basically" you need to work out which wires are for which speaker(s), FR, FL, RR, RL... install a trigger line to the ignition (or ICC), and run them to the rear of the car or where ever you wish to install the amps... If the amps have high level inputs (as I have advised you get), you will need to run a power line from the battery to the amps with a fuse and a power splitter/disty box if you wish (better the a loop out from the other amp), and run a ground to the cars body somewhere...

Run a RCA from the 4ch amp powering your speakers (the output), to the amp powering your sub (if you run with 2 amps rather the a 5ch), and then run your speaker wires and setup your sub...

Anything else guys, let me know....

thanx 4 the prompt reply. whith the icc unit I have. I have not touched it any way. it is not hooked up to my amps at all....

I did hook up new speakers to the icc about a week ago and they have been working through the icc unit.

it was when I cut the stock speaker cable (orange/green orange/black) so I can redirect it to the amp.

my amps are all connected to the battery with a fuse next to the battery and runs up the side of my cabin. the amps are connected to the aftermarket deck via RCA.

I find it abit wierd that cutting stock speaker cable can cause so much trouble. I would of thought wiring my aftermarket deck would of been harder :P
