I've heard reports from people using Tom Tom that it is cheap and nasty and basically pretty crap to put it succinctly ... but I admit I haven't used it myself.

I also have heard the same thing. Apparently if you are in USA all good as the maps are complete- but I heard that the Aussie maps are TERRIBLE in the sense that a LOT of the roads are missing.

Cheers,

Ross

I have been using the Streetpilot C320 for about a year in it is excellent and simple to use.

It is all touchscreen, can input the destination in a few keystrokes and is very portable.

It has a 8hr batter life and also has a trip meter and speedo.

For $800 it is a good solution and is user upgradeable

TomTom is the top selling brand in UK and Europe. Garmin 320 is very, very easy to use. Basically they are all very much the same because they all use Sensis maps as their database.

My personal choice would be the Garmin 320 (I have played with most of them). cheers

wait for the GARMIN NUVI310 (coming VERY, VERY soon)

best NAV ever..

as with all garmin gear its really easy to use, probably the best built gear and it has handsfree bluetooth, but the best bit about it...

instead of telling you to "turn left in 200 metres", it'll say "in 200 metres turn left down smith street"

and instead of "You have reached your destination". itll say "You have arrived at Johns house"

RRP is $1199, but that's only RRP.

What fuggin good is that if you're looking for John Street?:smilielol:

That is the one thing I have always been peeved with when using my GPS units - the name of the street is there BUT you can't always be peering at the screen to read it while you're driving in heavy traffic - voice confirmation of the street would be very handy.

As would some street signs with names of streets clearly visible - are you listening you fuggin useless councils!!!?

From firsthand experience Tomtom does not have any streets missing. I have found it to be awesome.

In addition, it has points of interest in it's database so you can se fixed speed cameras, petrol stations, navigate to restaurants etc etc damn good I say.

ESPECIALLY the SPEED CAMERAS

Oh and having Mr T's voice tell you to "turn left in 200 metres" you FOOL

Thanks for the advice... I'm going to see if I can use a few contacts to get some pricing better than RRP before I go from here. I used a Tomtom a couple of days ago, which was quite good but it had trouble after coming out of a carpark and got really confused... suffice to say it decided that instead of heading up the road for 3 kms to my destination... it chose a route of 62.3kms... which also vindicates my theory of validation... which is despite the fact that the instruments are telling you everything is okay but it don't feel right then maybe it's time to stop

The last track day, I had one of the brakes grab going over the hill at Pukekohe race day in an 'enhanced' XR6T which meant that the left wall was a tad closer to my passenger than was originally intended... nothing wrong with the lights or gauges though...
