The test must be reasonably old...

Castrol Formula R was replaced by Castrol Edge at the start of the year.

Well I've used Castrol Formula R 10W60 since my car was a few 1000 k's old, and when the engine was diassembled recently after 78000 k's it was literally like new inside, so no change for me when my upgraded engine goes back in shortly.

Castrol EDGE 10W60 it will be :crybaby:

How did the pennzoil GT performance 10W40 go? that's what I've been using. That was recommended to me by Simon, and also another mate who has been in the motor performance industry for a while also gave it the thumbs up.. buggered if I know aye! I change mine every 3000-5000km, so I suppose I don't give it the chance to really go bad.

I recently read in some misguided magazine, Street Commodores (Mar 06 Ed), an article where they carried out some friction tests with various off-the-shelf engine oils.

They only included full synthetic or semi-synthetic oils, such as Mobil 1, Shell Helix Ultra and Plus etc.

The interesting outcome was that the two best performing oils were from Royal Purple and Penrite. These two clearly outperformed the other oils (18 all up), including Mobil 1 and Shell Helix Ultra (these two kind of performed badly in comparison).

In the article it did say it was not a comprehensive test, and were done on a test machine (not an actual engine). But I thought it showed a good indication of the oils lubricating ability and film strength.

Just thought people on this forum would be interested about this.

I'd really need to know what conditions were simulated in the test before basing any credibilty on it. You say they used a machine not a car.

So did they replicate temperature in any way?

Also did they test the oil after it had been used for say 1,000 km, after which time it would begin to contain contaminants from the engine combustion process?

IMO no test can truely simulate engine conditions - and not just in a room on a dyno either - it must be on the road.

Pulling down an engine after 200,000 km will provide my only judgement of oil performance. My cars have always run Castrol - currently Formula R but soon to be Edge apparently.

Anyone using BP Visco 5000 in your XR6t. If so how long have you used this oil in your XR6T and what you think of it.

I am considering using it however the local Ford dealer did not recommend it as they thought that being a 5w40 oil, it would leak pass the turbo, and cause the engine to smoke.

Indepenmdent tests results on the Web indicate the Visco outperforms Mobile 1??
