Engine Oils Comparison

I recently read in some misguided magazine, Street Commodores (Mar 06 Ed), an article where they carried out some friction tests with various off-the-shelf engine oils.

They only included full synthetic or semi-synthetic oils, such as Mobil 1, Shell Helix Ultra and Plus etc.

The interesting outcome was that the two best performing oils were from Royal Purple and Penrite. These two clearly outperformed the other oils (18 all up), including Mobil 1 and Shell Helix Ultra (these two kind of performed badly in comparison).

In the article it did say it was not a comprehensive test, and were done on a test machine (not an actual engine). But I thought it showed a good indication of the oils lubricating ability and film strength.

Just thought people on this forum would be interested about this.

Yeah I have always liked penrite oils. I used to run it in my 67 falcon. I noticed on my oil pressure guage it would always indicate around the same point no matter where it was in the rev range. Think its got something to do with its viscosity.

I ran another oil and the pressure guage would be all over the place and drop away a fair bit at idle. They also say its 100% new ingredients. Not sure what this is suppoesed to mean must be a selling point.

Has anyone looked/using their new "SIN" range in their cars

I just had oil changed buy Ford, they use a semi synthetic Castrol oil. Dont know if that means anything. Prob not does feel better though after having the oil done at 3000km

That would be Castrol FMX 15W-40.

That's what my dealer used to put in my car.

I switched to Castrol Edge 10W-60 lastnight.

that's the one my brother and I both use 10W-60, Castrol Edge.

Its pretty expensive but every drop of that its well worth it.

Tony from F.I.T (Forced Induction Technology), a Expensive Daewoo Performance Specialist, and his customers with modified cars also used that as its rated as one of the best oils in the world!!

I have also heard that Royal Purple is right up there with Castrol as one of the bests!!!

What about Castrol oil??? I thought it was right up there with the oils??

Was there any mention of that?

The only Castrol oil they included in the comparison was Castrol Formula R 0W-40, and it, along with the others performed poorly in comparison to the top three in the test. The top 3 were

- Royal Purple 10W-40 Multigrade

- Royal Purple R51

- Penrite Synthetic 5 5W-60

The oils that were included were

- Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40

-Shell Helix Plus 15W-50

-Gulf Western Ultra 15W-50

-Pennzoil GT Performance 10W-40

-Fuchs Titan Supersyn MB 5W-30

-Motul Turbolight 10W-40

-Motul E-Tech 0W-40

-Elf Excellium GP 5W-40

-Mobil 1 0W-40

-Mobil Synth S 10W-40

- Pentrite HPR 5 Semi Synthetic 5W-40

- RedLine Synthetic 5W-40

- Elf Competition GT 10W-40

-Valvoline Durablend 10W-40

- and the 4 others I mentioned above.

Judging from this test, I will most likely go with the Penrite Synthetic 5 for my next oil change. Being a top performer and Aussie.
