Scanning local car yards, it seems I can pick up an 03 XR6T 6 spd for around the 33K mark. For 20K more, it seems I can drive away in a similar aged FPV Typhoon.

So for me, this poses a dilemma. My plan is to buy an XR6T and spend about 20K on mods from engine to suspension and brakes. But have FPV already ticked those boxes for me? Do I really need to spend 20K on a stocker when I could just save myself the time?

The only prerequisites I have are for the vehicle to handle & stop exceptionally well, plus the abilty to make 400rw ponies all day long on fairly conservative boost.

Your opinions, gentlemen....

Yes, it's worth the extra.

In my case, I had a BA MkII XR6T 6-speed. I contemplated building the engine, etc. But when doing the sums of modifying the XR vs. buying a new BF F6, the F6 represented much better value for money. It comes with better con-rods and valve springs, plus a host of exclusive FPV features. Better brakes, suspension etc. These other items plus the cost of engine/trans upgrade will probably set you back as much as the F6.

If you're looking at keeping the car for many years then the modified route might be the way to go. Remember though, a modified XR will never be the same as a F6.

that's a big turn around for you jason, you used to say the total oposite from memory. Good to see you see the value in the FPV product, its well worth the extra

Nah Pete, I think he is saying that regarless of what you do to an XR6T it will never be an F6... is that what you meant M6XR6T?

ah ok, thanks Jack, it'll never have that bigger back wing! damn!

It's more than that... I can see the value same for same of an XR6T vs a Typhoon... I just can't afford it, I own my XR6T outright, and have a home loan, no home loan, well then a Typhoon becomes very attractive, a great package. But I'll have half a Typhoon (so far the transmission and intercooler :hiwelcome: :tease: ) and a house for the time being...

No Simon, it's not a turnaround, rather, a matter of calculating the cost of the modifications vs change-over value. For example:

XR6T engine upgrade - $4.5k minimum plus fitting and tuning.

Valve spring upgrade - $800 labour plus parts.

Clutch upgrade - $1500

Trans upgrade (if 5-speed manual) - $6k approx, excluding clutch kit

Brake upgrade - $2-3k for BA Performance brakes (non-Brembo)

Suspension - $1500 - $2000

And so on, and so on. Doing some quick arithmatic your easily forking out $17,300 to upgrade the XR to F6 spec. And then you still don't have the FPV branding and build number.

So in my case, changeover represented better value for money than upgrading the XR :hiwelcome: And need I say how much better I consider the auto over the 6-speed manual.

I'd rather the genuine FPV than a modified XR. But that's my opinion only.
