The Radar speed detectors emit Non-ionising radiation which above certain daily doses will cause cataracts in the eyes, reproductive problems and in severe cases cancer. People who work with radiation are known to only produce girls cos their boy taddies can't swim properly. I would say there is a bigger risk with their eyes though since it's above the dash.

Apparently there were a number of California Highway Patrol Officers who took civil action against the Dept because a number of them developed testicular cancer.

I used to be amazed at seeing a copper sitting over a slant radar unit & wondering what cancer they'd cause.

Silver Eagle radar units are not mounted on the inside door frame of any unmarked NSW police highway car. They are all mounted on the dash, just inside the A pillar. I dont know what you have seen, but some private companies do also do stories wtih the media and this may be what you saw.

In addition, other state and territories are still known to affix there radar devices on the outside of the rear passenger window, even on there unmarked cars.

I think that some people are confusing the different Police technologies used for Speed measurement.

K or Ka Radar - is what is used on cars and mobile speed cameras. these devices DO emmit radiation, EMF and is harmful. The NSW police SOP manual says they must be behind and 60cm from the officer. So technically all the window mounted units are in contradiction of the rules.

LIDAR (laser) - is invisable light and is harmful if you looked directly intot he lense. I do not know the long term effect of the officer, but I am sure it it would not be healthy.

Those lasers operate (as do nearly all commerical and Defence lasers) at an eye safe fequency and neither you, I nor they are at risk from exposure to it.

Ding,

They might be a class 1 Laser, but I would not look into the lense if it was operating.

I know what I seen because two of the nations finest came out in full uniform with their fish & chips & then drove off. Also my wife told me on her return that the girl inside was telling everyone that the white car was a police vehicle & be carefull, not realizing that the wallopers were standing at one end where she wasn't looking ! :spoton:
