There is a scam out whereby a service or someone calls your mobile briefly to generate a "missed call" and if u call the number back u pay a lot apparently.  A friend emailed me about this today and I got one of these fake calls tonite.

Ill put the full email in here shortly.

I was rung by the one in bold.

if you do, you will be charged $50 as it is an internet number...it says

you have won $40 and to call another number....then you will get slapped

with another $50 amount.

I was hit by 02 8404 2296 at 11.00 pm on the 29/5, I figured if they are game enough to ring me at that time of night, that they will ring back.

I have seen missed calls like that on my phone. Simple really, if someone wants to get it touch with me they can call back again... there's no way I'm gonna call interstate to find out who it is.

There was a similar scam recently where you would have a missed call and when u rang back it would answer immediately (without ringing) and playback an engaged tone down the phone line, so if you rang back multiple times you would be charged a fair bit thinking u didnt actually get through at all.
