I was just wondering if anyone has any idea of the noise my car is making.

After returning from Perth for a few days, I started up my car for a drive to the local shops and noticed a very light ticking noise coming from the engine. It only makes the noise when accelerating in gear. It does not make the noise in park or neurtral, only when in drive. It is not that loud and can only be heard when the radio is completely off. It is a rhythmic ticking and I would say that it does not increase in intensity when accelerating.

The car seems to drive and accelerate fine though :fool:

I will be taking it to the tuner tomorrow sometime but just though I would ask anyways.

ive got that ticking, sounds like electrical arcing ?

coming from the the area under or around the air duct?

it seems to keep the same ticking pace, even if revving out, but gets louder as you press harder on the gas.

I would be happy if that was all it was! Mine sounds like it is coming from the engine but is really hard to pin point.

My tuner unfortunetely cant even tell where it is coming from. I thought it was starting to fade and might just be something settling in the engine after having the valve springs installed. I was just imagining things as it seems to be the same intensity now that I listen to it all day.

Check the rubber bungs that go through your firewall. I had the Unichimp cables running through one of mine and it was not well sealed around the cable where they had cut the bung. I could hear the injectors ticking quite clearly. A bit of extra silicone sealant fixed that. Amazing how much difference a tiny hole makes. There was no increase in the engine noise, only the injector noise.

I did drive it for a short trip with a bung missing and it was like driving without having a firewall. Enormous amount of noise coming from a 40mm hole.

Also had a ticking noise coming from the air ducting. It was a leaf flapping on the fan blades. That obviously did not change with acceleration etc, it remained constant.

I also have the ticking noise, my T is a stock 2003 manual. I took it to my local ford dealer, they had it tested and they could not find out what was casing the noise.

However when I got a new set of tyre’s the noise completely stopped for around 2 months, but after a while the ticking noise came back.

So I took it back to ford, they told me that they had their head engineer out to drive it. They basically said that there is nothing that can be done and it a fault with the car that cannot be fixed. They said that they put me down on some system they notifies Ford that I have this problem and if there is ever a fix then I will be contacted.

So, in essence, you had an unknown fault with your car that MOFOCO could not be bothered to examine enough to find out what it was and that they would add you to the list so that when a fix was found for an unknown fault, you would be notified.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I don't know what they are smokin, but I want some!

my ticking seems to definately be near the air ducting, and might be what God666 explained as something stuck inside the ducting, because the sound is the same constant tick.

not sure what the Bung hole explanation is, where exactly is this small 40mm hole that could be the problem?

tonight I was giving it a small run after work, in the outer rural area.

so pushing hard on the gas, it drops a gear, but the ticking noise really gets loud, until I take my foot off the gas and roll, then most of the sound is road noise.

idling makes a very noticeable sound, like going through a drive through fast food lane, and the sound bounces off the brick wall, its quite loud even idling.

its a real shame, makes the car sound like a worn out struggler. although ive got it at 140 in 2nd, seems to handle it, just that loud ticking noise.
