Heres the difference. Original FPV guage holders are injection moulded, so they come out of an injection moulding machine exactly the same every time. Aftermarket holders are Vacuum Formed, which means that every single one is moulded from a sheet of plastic. Each one then has to be indivdually trimmed to the required size to get rid of excess plastic that is part of this process. This involves a human input, hence the variations in each one. The tooling for injection moulding to make these would be around $30-$35k. The tooling for a vacuum formed unit would be no more than $5k. The reason the aftermarket guys do not use an injection moulded tool is because it would take alot of sales to recoup there return on investment. I know this because I have spent 27 years in the engineering plastics industry and have been involved in all forms of plastics processing, design and setup. Hope this helps answer your questions. By the way, I'd be interested in knowing if people are interested in an injection moulded 3 pod guage holder, identical to the FPV one but with a 3rd pod to allow for afr gauge or any other gauge to fit, this would be identical fit to the original gauge holder, ie no trimming and no ugly press studs, simply clip in as per the OEM unit. If I had enough interest, I may consider tooling up for it.

Cheers

Jeff

Ive spent 15 years as a Toolmaker in Adelaide Phoon and see where you are coming from. The studs look crap. Not sure if you get the volume, even on here, to cover your costs. Would be a damn sight cheaper than ebay though at $430 each for the two pod. Count me in lad I'll get one.... :stirthepot:

cheers

G'day Johno,

Just to explain myself, I ceratinly dont expect to recoup the tooling cost overnight, its not a get rich quick scheme for me. I would be happy to recoup tooling costs within 3 years. that's a normal expectancy for Return on investment for capital expenditure items that are assets, I would be stupid to think I could get enough sales here overnight to get investment back. I am looking at future sales and models to ensure profitability. Besides, I am a bit selfish anyway. I want a 3 gauge pod for my car as well. I just get sick of paying prices for things for my car that I know are downright criminal. It seems that enthusiasts like us getted ripped, cause most suppliers (not all) know that we will pay whatever they charge cause theres no alternative. Hope this helps you understand where I am coming from.

Cheers

Jeff

All sweet Jeff,

Tell the truth, from the reaction youve got already, I think youll be right in two years, but watch the pirates champ, in 6 months there will be a piece of sh*t die out of China that will nail your price. Forget patents, they dont work, China doesnt give a rats, as you might know already from within the industry. It was sad to hear my old toolroom in Adelaide has slowed up due to this sh*t after contacts they had for 25 years have gone to China.

just my $2.99 worth

cheers

Johno

G'day again Johno,

patents arent really worth the paper they are written on. It costs hundreds of thousands to defend, which small business operators just cant come up with. Design Registration is a different matter. Register your design and you dont have to worry where the copies come from, because its the sellers you go after, not the manufacturers. Ive had to defend a few in my time running various businesses.

What CAD/CAM systems are you using?.Spent 15 years on Mastercam running a CNC Mill and CNC EDM. All for plastic injection. If youve got the right gear which it sounds like you have, shouldnt be a drama mate.

Cant wait.

CNC stands for computer numerical control. It is a versatile system that allows you to control the motion of tools and parts through computer programs that use numeric data. CNC can be used with nearly any traditional machine.

and EDM : Electrical Discharge Machine

For those uneducated people :stirthepot: lol

Theres a couple weeks of design work in this in between everything else as there are a few tools , tooling about 12 to 14 weeks, tool trialing 1 to 2 weeks.

Then the fun begins. Will keep you posted on progress.

Cheers

Jeff
