Original FPV guage holders are injection moulded, so they come out of an injection moulding machine exactly the same every time. Aftermarket holders are Vacuum Formed, which means that every single one is moulded from a sheet of plastic. Each one then has to be indivdually trimmed to the required size to get rid of excess plastic that is part of this process. This involves a human input, hence the variations in each one. The tooling for injection moulding to make these would be around $30-$35k. The tooling for a vacuum formed unit would be no more than $5k. The reason the aftermarket guys do not use an injection moulded tool is because it would take alot of sales to recoup there return on investment. I know this because I have spent 27 years in the engineering plastics industry and have been involved in all forms of plastics processing,design and setup. Hope this helps answer your questions. By the way, I'd be interested in knowing if people are interested in an injection moulded 3 pod guage holder, identical to the FPV one but with a 3rd pod to allow for afr gauge or any other gauge to fit, this would be identical fit to the original gauge holder, ie no trimming and no ugly press studs, simply clip in as per the OEM unit. I would be happy to recoup tooling costs within 3 years. that's a normal expectancy for Return on investment for capital expenditure items that are assets, I would be stupid to think I could get enough sales here overnight to get investment back. I am looking at future sales and models to ensure profitability. Besides, I am a bit selfish anyway. I want a 3 gauge pod for my car as well. I just get sick of paying prices for things for my car that I know are downright criminal. It seems that enthusiasts like us getted ripped, cause most suppliers (not all) know that we will pay whatever they charge cause theres no alternative. It costs hundreds of thousands to defend, which small business operators just cant come up with. Design Registration is a different matter. Register your design and you dont have to worry where the copies come from, because its the sellers you go after, not the manufacturers. Ive had to defend a few in my time running various businesses.
