Gear Drives? I suppose you're talking about Gilmer drives. If so, the advantage of these is they have toothed gears on the pulley wheels to stop slippage.

They are designed for supercharger drives due to the force needed to turn the superchargers turbines. On an XR6T, well, I don't think there would be any advantage except for cosmetic and the 'supercharger' belt sound, but you wouldn't want that on a turbo car anyway.

I think that's what you are referring to anyhow????

I would have though he meant the gear drive they use to drive the cam on a single cam V8. Dont think you can get them for an overhead cam engine. I could be wrong though...

I think the gear drives Darren is referring to are the type that you hear on chevies and sound like they are supercharged.

Most pushrod motors use a chain drive and sprockets to link the camshaft with the crank. Geardrives replace the chain and sprockets and give a direct drive via gears, usually straight cut...this is why they have a whirring sound. They use geardrives to prevent chain breakage and slop.

A lot of owners get it for the supercharged noise they make.

My 1st post here - hello

I know Pete Jackson made a good set of geardrives for 350 Chevies, 351 Fords. They are superior to chaindrives in the sense they don't stretch, resulting in bad cam-timing.

Nowadays true roller-chains are getting close to the same reliability as gear drives. Geardrives will have an advantage where very aggressive cams are used, with hefty valvesprings , especially in turbocharged engines where you are running huge 2.02"Intakes, and high bosst-pressures.

You will need good quality dual-or triple springs, which will wear out a chain in relatively short time, but geardrives will last a lot longer. They are typically more noisier though, quite ok for the dragstrip, but sh*tty when you go on a 700km trip :)

Sounds more like you have a Hercus lathe stuck under the bonnet!

HEY !!!!! I love the sound of my hercus lathe. and it scare's the boy racers off coz they not sure whats lurking under the bonnet

Hmm let's see - You have gear drives in your gearbox, really useful coz without you go NOWHERE.

Next you have gear drives in your diff, without which you go NOWHERE, so to summarise - GEAR DRIVES ARE REALLY USEFUL THINGS in an XR6T :spoton:

Well if you say so,

I guess not only was it a dumb question, but also a genuine one at that. I was unaware of 'gear drives' as such being available in gearbox or diff, I'll leave that to those that are mechanically minded.

The gear drives I was referring to, apparently are 'perfectly timed' and do have certain clicking and whining noise.

But thanks for steering me in the right direction though! :fool:
